Hey All,

I've a question for you.

Who creates (in terms of a final processed black and white and or color product) landscape and nature photographs like you want to?

We are all aware of the great master's like Ansel Adams but who are the contemporary photographer's out there doing inspiring work from your point of view? I'm looking for a way to find those photographers whose work I can work on trying to learn from by trying to learn or figure out some of the techniques they use. You all can help.

So I'd appreciate it if you could list a photographer or 2 that inspires you - hopefully that has a website or blog that I/we could view. Go ahead and include yourself if it fits.

So far in my casting about looking I found Gale Rainwater - much of what he?/she? does absolutely awe inspiring - looking for more.

Hey All,

I'm going to try and look through the photographers suggested and see how they strike me and comment as I have time.

First both those guys are great! I saw a "wall hanger" on both sites - Bison in a Blizzard (resolute unstoppable immediately came to mind) from Brandenberg and Civilization from DoBrowner (yes civilization really does cower under the timelessness - mountains - and power - weather - of Mother Nature thought came immediately to mind). The ability to "see" and produce these images is awesome. The Winship site didn't do a lot for me although it is really good photo documentary stuff.

What I'm after is the technical expertise of guys like these coupled with an achievement of that certain dynamic balance (for example - between power and serenity - IMO there are other balances as well) to create "wall hangers". And when an image can convey such a clear message like those two did it's just the icing on the cake. I think most of Rainwater's images achieve that balance. Some might think the color "overdone" and perhaps in some cases it is but my "gut feel" is better to err on the side of a little extra rather than too little most of the time. The expertise is in knowing which to do when and how to do it. Here is a link to Rainwater.

Hey All,

Outstanding as well. Not really my thing as abstract minimalist work stressing dynamic balance between a few elements isn't what I'm after but that said I really liked his Iceland portfolio as to me minimalism just "fits" with my mental picture of Iceland. For me images like Black Church and Grave - Well I'd be honoured to have created that picture and have it framed. Many of his other portfolio folders also gravitate toward abstract art in extracting elements from very busy landscapes while I'm more interested in the whole landscape rather than just a few elements. That said I'd like to be even 1% as good at what I want to do as he is as what he does.

Hey All,

WOW! Really amazing photos. I like most everything I saw there although I suspect the colors are probably overdone for some peoples tastes. In a similar fashion I often wondered if Jousuf Karsh's portraits (see Einstein) were ever "overdone" for some people's tastes?

I have to wonder about post processing on these. I don't know if a camera ever brings such vibrant colors to the fore without post-processing. Film rarely did - digital is a whole new world. I wonder how many if any of those images have undergone "pseudo-HDR" style processing? Great stuff!

I think she was listed in the Guardian or some other limey paper/web site.  I found it over at the online photographer.

Isn't the caption thing odd?  I suppose the ones that grab you let you apply any story you want to them so why ruin them with a narrative that might not be as interesting.
