Epson x900 and real world colors
« on: February 25, 2009, 11:44:54 pm »

Hello,

It is time to upgrade printers and since there are few, if no applicable, reviews — I want to solicit photographers who own an Epson 7900 or 9900 do you see a marked improvement in usable "real world colors" over the Epson x880 printers?

Do the new orange and green cartridges make a major, or minor, printing color improvement in reproducing the sometimes difficult natural landscape colors? Seems I'm always selecting and tweaking orange/red/blue greens in junipers and pine trees, along with the multitude of winter grasses orange/red yellows with the K3 ink set. Has the new HDR inks improved this conundrum?

thank you,
Anthony Howell

Ps - Color, tonalities, detail and archivability is always my primary concern...... I must be myopically autistic

This should cover most of your questions.

The short answer is that the gamut improvements are subtle. The speed/cost/usability/etc.. improvements are the real reason to upgrade. It think marked improvement is shooting a bit high. Check out reviews there are gamut comparisons and some real world observations.

Thank you Jullian for the reply,

I was beginning to think "no reply" to my question translates into no tangible improvement in photographic real world colors.

As I am in the process of upscaling from a 7800 to a 44" printer. It was your spectraflow review that encouraged my inquiry before purchasing a 9900 - or a 9880.....
"Overall I would say that the for the photographer the expanded gamut offered by the x900 is not reason enough to justify upgrading from a 7880. Nor would I suggest that gamut should be a significant factor in choosing between an Epson 7900 and a Z3200."

Print speed, expanded number of pantone colors, 700ml ink cartridge size are non-factors to myself.

Better color rendering and a reduction of number of test prints pulled are factors worth serious consideration..... Probably buy a 9900 before the end of the month.

thank you again,

Having recently purchased a 7900 through Spectraflow I must say they're attention to detail and follow up is very impressive.  My first purchase of ink from them blew me away.  I ordered in the afternoon of one day and it was at my door before 9AM the next.

Standard no affliation statement goes here.
