Ink cost per square inch?

I'm considering an Epson 3800 or larger printer and I know that the printer software will allow you calculate ink usage and from there, a cost.  Has anyone tracked these costs and derived an "average" cost per square inch for an "average" color print?  I know there are lots of variables, but having some idea would seem to be crucial to pricing a quote for a print before actually printing it.
