Mamiya 645AFD with 132c problem
« on: February 14, 2009, 03:55:12 am »

I am experiencing an annoying problem with 132c on Mamiya 645afd. About 1 in 10 shots result in "Error 05" or "No DB" on Mamiya, or the camera just refuses to operate though the back seems to work fine. The issue can be resolved by turning the camera off, turning the IB off and on, disattaching the back and putting it back again. The problem gets worse when working tethered. In addition, it sometimes take some 10 seconds or more for the image to appear on the screen and back be ready for an other shot.
The problem seems to be related to camera-back interconnection as everything works fine when the back is firmly pressed towards the camera. I have checked the adapter and cleaned the contacts but with no real effect.
Has anybody encountered similar problems with their Mamiyas and Hasselblad/Imacon backs? Is this really a connection problem or something else (tethered shooting problems and back delays make me a bit doubt in this)? And what other diagnostics and solutions can be performed?

Mamiya 645AFD with 132c problem

It may be a dub suggest, but i have one problem with my PhaseOne back and mamiya camera; when i mount a lens the back doesn't save in the exif file wich lens it is, because there is a little problem of communication between the camera and the back. I found the solution to this problem, i simply have to change the mode of the camera, for example from M to P and then the camere and the back speak the same language... It's an inexpensive test, try it, maybe this miracle works also for you! I remember that when i discovered this problem i tried everything: i clened the contacts, turned of and on in every different order camera and back, but nothing! Then, i don't know how, i changed the camera's mode and it worked!
Good luck and my best.

michele, thanks! Tried changing the modes but nothing happens. The only remaining solution is to press the back to the camera, but this is a bit annoying yet still not critical. Your problem must have been different from mine since there all the data in my EXIF is present.

Any other opinions?

If you are having to "press the camera to the back" the digital interface connectors are not making a sufficiently low resistance contact. The "no db" indicates there is no back connected (are you sure that the indication isn't "-no-"?).  Perhaps the back to camera mount is not sufficiently tight enough to bring the contacts together. There should be no "play" between them when attached properly.

Be certain the contacts are clean. Though they are gold plated the contacts will be compromised by salt air, sulfur compound emissions, e.g. from nearby paper mills, coal and fuel oil fired power plants, etc. Try a contact cleaner/preservative like Caig ProGold or Caig R2. These products have worked well in my seaside/paper mill environment.

Also, I have found it best, in untethered use, to first turn on the back (Phase P45+ in my case) and then turn on the 645 AFD. This prevents "CAP DB" delays.

Ok, the back-to-camera connection issue is clear, but now there is yet an other problem: "Cap Db" delays. After the shot the LED on the IB remains yellow sometimes for about 10sec. Even more often, the camera shows "Cab Db" or "Busy Db" messages even if the back is ready for the next shot. Turning the camera off and on helps, but this is no convenient solution.
Has anybody faced this issue? Turning the back first and then the camera does not help.

Be sure to use alkaline or more powerfull batteries. I had the same with Nicad and metalhybride batteries. They dissapeared with the use of good 1,5 volt batteries in the camera.

for example, i found that is practically impossible to use rechargeable AA batteries with the mamiya body. they "hold charge" for just a few shots and then they go down near zero immediately.
i have brand new batteries from Energizer, but they really last 30 or 40 shots before giving the battery too low message.
I found that has been impossible to be eco responsible with the mamiya body.

For most of my profesional work i now only use Hasselblad h3d , h2f and h2 bodies. Only some great mamiya lenses such as the 200mm apo, the 105/210 and the super rotator are still used on my 645afd body. The pro-tl also lost power while being not used and the 6v battery wasn't that cheap either. i use the kodak alkaline batteries, the cheapest on the market i thing because i can shoot a fair amount of images with one set but when i forget to remove the grip from the body they get drained anyhow.

Thank you! I am now using NiMH 2700amh, will try alkaline ones tomorrow.
BTW, the issue does not seem to be related to low battery level — they certainly drain fast, after one session, but Cap Db delays occur even when newly charged batteries are installed.
Moreover, sometimes there are IB delays — after the shot LED on the back turns green, but on the IB it stays yellow for about 10 seconds. This is accompanied by Cap Db message.

I suspect the issues you are having ALL relate to poor communication between the 132C and Mamiya.
Couple of things to rule out:
You are having the issue both tethered and untethered yes? (this will rule out any firewire issues)
Have you tried a different connector cable between the image bank and back?
Do you have access to another mamiya?

Nick,
1) Previously the issue mostly appeared when shooting tethered and I felt it was less common when used stand-along, but it seems that now it appears in the field also. I cannot tell for sure since I mostly shoot landscapes untethered and there is no need for making a lot of exposures.
2) I have tried 2 cables — 1m and 10m ones, with the same result. Will try two more next week.
3) Unfortunately, there is no other body anywhere nearby, but I will check it just in case.

UPDATE: just have put 6 2700 NiMh batteries in my mamiya ans after 8 exposures NO DB. switched them for 1,5 volts and works like a charm.

Have just installed 1.5v alkaline batteries but with no result: Cap Db delay after 3 shots, then no db after a couple more frames.
Will probably try force downloading firmware into the IB...
