Crater Lake, OR. Planning a weekend trip in a few weeks..
« on: February 09, 2009, 10:29:11 pm »

I'm planning a trip down to Crater Lake in a few weeks (I live in Seattle, WA). I'd love to know some good spots to shoot and places to stay in the area. Any sample shots would be appreciated.

Thanks!

It's snowed in this time of year. Here's a sample shot (not mine)... note that it was a 30 mile snowshoe hike over 5 days to get this shot.

Hmmmm. Well, I'm not afraid of a bit of hiking. This is what the webpage says:

"North Entrance Road and Rim Drive are now CLOSED for the season. Highway 62 through the park and the road to park headquarters and Rim Village remain OPEN.  However, snowy and icy road conditions can occur at this time of year, resulting in temporary road closures. Please call ahead for the most current weather and road information."

I've got tire chains and arctic snow boots, so I'm not too freaked about this. I'm also thinking about renting a 4x4 for the weekend. Would shooting in and around "Rim Village" be at all satisfying? If not, how far are we talking to get to a good area?

Sorry to be so vague, but I'm not at all familiar with the area.

Pretty much anywhere around the rim, Rim Village included, is perfectly fine.  You just won't be able to get different local details, and and will be less able to adjust where the sun is, if a limited amount of the rim road is open.  Still well worth it.

If the weather is good, the views from the Rim Village area are awesome!  Even better if you follow the trail on the rim to the west towards Discovery Point. You might want to bring snowshoes or x-c skis, although you won't have to go far and it's fairly level. From the Rim Village parking area to Discovery Point is a little over one mile. At several points along the rim you'll have great views of the lake and Wizard Island.

Be sure to check conditions just before you go. The snow depth is lower than normal this year, but I tried for a winter visit at this time last year and the road was closed at park HQ, 3 miles below the rim.

Have a great trip!
