Difference between Hassy CF & CFI lenses.
« on: February 05, 2009, 06:44:45 pm »

I was looking to buy a couple of used Hasselblad lenses but I see a disparity in price between the CF & CFI versions of the same lens, anyone know what, if any, difference of consequence exists between the two generations?

From Hasselblad CFi&CFE Manual:

The CFi and CFE lenses feature a list of improvements on the basic CF lenses that together produce an increase in image quality, reliability and convenience in operation. They include:

* new internal design and new anti-reflection materials reducing stray light and enhancing the image contrast
* improved design and a new main spring extending life expectancy and increasing precision
* PC-socket with positive lock
* redesigned focusing mechnism
* reinforced rear bayonet
* front bayonet in durable non-metallic material
* new external design for comfort and style

Filmcapture,

Excellent.

I will add a few items.

CFi the “i” signifies improved

1. Easier to read scales (numbers are larger)
2. The main spring is made of "Nivarox”
3. Improved grip controls on the focusing ring, shutter speed ring and on the FLE ring on the 40mm and 50mm lenses.

CFE The “E” signifies electronic. In addition to the improvements above, E lenses have 4 data bus contacts on the lens mount that allow the lens to communicate with the 200 series cameras metering system. CFE lens offer all the improvements found in the CFi lenses.

Occassionally you will come across CB lenses.
CB the B signifies basic. Some features have been removed from the lens.
1. The “F” function (leaf shutter lock up) has been removed.
2. Has a 1-year warranty instead of 3-year warranty.
3. Has one color of paint. All white vs. CFi, which has orange on the EV scale.
4. Reduced price.

The only CB lens to stay away from is the 80, the others are optically the same as CFi and CFE. If you are shooting digital with the sync cable from the back to the lens sync, The new lenses are much better the new sync  connector is way more reliable.

Totally minor difference is that the font used for the markings is different. Much finer and IMHO easier to read, makes the older one look a little "crude".
I also second the sync cable lock a real advantage with a digital back.
Longevity wise I'm not sure that the "rubber" grip finish, will be as robust as the older models.
The CFi also doesn't have the red date code stamp in the barrel. As they are recently introduced this is not an issue but in the future buying used you will not be able to date the lens other than a guess with the serial No. range.
