Photography beginner - i want some critic from the pro
« on: February 04, 2009, 11:36:06 am »

I just bought my first DSLR - Canon 1000D to play around with. I started experimenting with different composition and I just want to know if I got any talent getting into professional photography.

there are some samples of my shot.

You've got some nice images, with the first and the last being, IMHO, the strongest. I really don't see a cohesive style, but then again that's not necessarily a bad thing. All to often someone's style turns into a crutch on which they lean. Some photographers even dread ever having an identifiable "style".

As for the photos themselves, I think you might want to reconsider/rework the second and third pix. In #2, the house gets too lost in the clouds and in #3, there's not really anything of interest to keep the viewers attention. Neither are bad, mind you, but of the five they are the weakest. I think the strongest is easily the last photo. Like #1, it has an interesting point of view, but the subject is much more compelling.

Can't tell from these whether, or not, you have career potential, but you are definitely doing some things right.

Nice job.

I agree with Chuck: the first and last shots hold my attention much more than the others.  Here's my critique, in order of shots- my opinion is free, so take it for what it's worth

1)  The colors and contrast make this one.  I like the perspective and the use of the wide angle lens.  My only suggestion- the background reeds (grass?) compete with the bench, and perhaps the camera should have been placed a bit to the left of where you were?

2)  It looks as if the bottom third of (what should have been present) was cropped out, weakening the shot.  The house almost looks like an afterthought.

3)  I like the lines here, but I think some judicious dodging and burning would add interest- there's an overall lack of contrast to my eye.

4)  There's just not much going on here for me.  I see too much foreground, and the sky looks pretty flat.

5)  I LOVE the blues!  Try cropping in from the right and from the bottom at bit, and also straighten the horizon.

I don't hope that these suggestions don't sound harsh or mean spirited, because I know that taking critique can hurt a bit- I've been there many times.  However, I learn quite a bit when I post here and think I'm a better photographer for it.

Hi, Franky,...

I like number 1, interesting view, composition,...
Number 2 and 3 don't do it for me...
For number 3 I'd go back and try the same but on a tripod, with low iso (100-200) and long exposure to get more detail and less black.
Number 5 has interesting colors but the perspective doesn't really do it for me,... don't be afraid to experiment with positions, bend through your knees or lay flat on your stomach when possible to get some other angles and often also more interesting perspectives. Another thing, I get the feeling that your horizon is tilted and comes close to the middle of your picture, which kills the tension in your picture.

Would also be nice if you could include some more information about the camera settings and lens(es) being used... I'm at work and unable to read exif information.

good luck.

For the first image you posted of the bench, I would consider taking it again with a level horizon- pleasing image though.

For your second round of photos, I would suggest you look into perspective control. It is far cheaper than buying a tilt-shift lens, and will make your images far easier to look at.
