Screw Mount for EOS
« on: February 03, 2009, 11:18:50 pm »

Hey all,

Anyone have success/failures with using old screw mount lenses with adapters?

I'm looking at buying this adapter from Adorama. Is there a dealer in Canada that will sell these? I have a number of old lenses that I would like to use on my 30D.

I put an old screw mount mirror lens on my 20D back in 2004 using an EOS adapter I had since the early 90s. It was just a goofy experiment that cost me nothing.

The mount worked fine, and the camera even metered ok. But the lens performed horribly. Can't imagine any use I'd have for it. Your lenses may be much better though.

I use Takumar (Asahi Pentax) lenses on my DRebel and now on a 5D mkII. My first adapter looked like the one in your link. It was too thick, my lenses could not focus at infinity. I sanded it down to improve it, it worked but I don't use it anymore since I got an (Ebay) adapter with focus confirmation that has correct infinity focus. With a FF camera you should be careful, some old lenses stick a little deeper in the body than Canon lenses, and block the mirror. With a 30D with a smaller mirror that won't be a problem. Some Takumars are very fine lenses, my 1.4/50mm SMC Takumar is wide open very much better then the copy I had from Canon, my 17mm fisheye Takumar is probably not as good as Canon's but I already had it...

excellent, thanks for the info! I've noticed that some of these "ebay fantastic" models come with electronics in them... whats all that about?

Like I said, focus confirmation in the viewfinder and/or with a bleep.

Interesting, Thanks very much. I think I'll try out one of these then since it seems like it works just fine.
