question for iPF 6100 (or any iPF Canon)
« on: February 02, 2009, 09:33:43 pm »

I'm low on MBK, but all others are showing at 60 percent - the exact same as when I installed them (they were the new ones, came with the printer). So, if I order others as well, which ones? I'm not trusting the report generated by the Canon software - they can't all be at 60%!

I am not sure the exact answer to your question - but I found that ordering a full set of inks [I have the IPF5100] let me negotiate a much better price than buying only a few.

My iPF6100 is brand new, but I had an iPF5000 for years before it, and it drank the inks with "photo" in their names (plus the yellow) noticeably more quickly than the others. I print mainly on photo black papers, so the matte black rarely gets used.

Most used:
Photo Gray
Photo Magenta
Photo Cyan
Yellow

Intermediate:
Gray (one cartridge died with ink in it, so I don't have a clear sense of how much it would have been used)
Red
Green
Blue

Least used
Photo Black
Matte Black
Cyan
Magenta

My Gray ink cartridge was the first to prompt a "low ink" warning. 4 or 5 others looked equally low, but I didn't get the warning. I ended up ordering Gray and Yellow (have a lot of Zion and Bryce images to print) from ITsupplies with free shipping (any order over $99).

I have a 6100, by the way...

Yeah, like negotiating a better mortgage rate! Thanks though - I'm sure it's a terrific idea (one I'll look into). For the moment though, it's odd - I've still regestered 60% of everything except the MBK (20%), and I'm printing color on matte paper. I expect I'll see everything hit 10% the day after my order though.

Thanks for your input. Sounds like my experience with the Epsons as well.

Print ratio B&W/Color = approx. 80%/20%

Only replaced PGY and GY, all others are still the starters

I have a new 9100, with about 420 sq ft of material run. Here are my ink levels starting from a new installation:
 MC:80%
 Y:100%  PC:100%   C:100% PGY:100%  GY:100%  BK:100%
 PM:100%   M:100% MBK: 80%   R: 80%   G:100%   B:100%

Looks like the counters decrement in 20% steps.

The iPF printers do report ink status in 20% increments, so when you get a warning, you will still have a ways to go before the cartridge is empty. And, according to Canon, the printers will analyze ink requirements for a job and not let it start if there is insufficient ink in any cartridge. I've now replaced all but one of my originals and my experience bears this out.

Who has the best prices on IPF5100 inks?  I'm still running on the starter cartridges but anticipate having to replace something at some point!

Cheers!

My PM ink went out way before my other ones on my iPF8100. I print 50% color and 50% toned black and white.
