Negative scanners - CanoScan 8800f

I need to scan a large number of slides and color/BW negatives (35mm) and need excellent quality, but I do not want to spend $1000 plus for a Nikon CoolScan. I have read some reviewing of the Canon 8800F that suggest it is a flatbed that can really do a great job on film, too. Does anyone have experience with using this scanner for slides/negatives? Or, perhaps suggest a dedicated slide/neg scanner?
