Canon 40D and 50D prices
« on: January 25, 2009, 04:05:25 pm »

Around the holidays, I was ready to pull the trigger on a purchase of the Canon 40D or 50D. At that time, the 40D was available on Amazon and B&H for $772. Now it's $899 ... $125 more! The 50D was available for $1,069. Now it's 1,199. I thought if anything the prices would drop, especially in a depressed economy. What's up?

All camera prices are on their way up. The US dollar has depreciated considerably over the past couple of quarters and manufacturers are forced to raise prices even in the face of poor sales and a slowing economy.

Watch the used market. This is a good time of the year for fantastic deals. Second thoughts after the impulse purchase over the holidays? Tax time coming up? I don't know. I just picked up an mint 50D in the box (probably never used since the battery wasn't even charged) for $925.00. Minty 40D's are going for $650 - $700.

Canon had some instant rebates going on.  They are no longer available so prices are back up.  That's the reason for the specific price increase you're referring to.  In addition to that I would expect future releases to have higher MSRPs due to both the strength of the yen against the dollar and the fact that they (some of the camera companies anyways) have reduced staff on their assembly lines which would indicate shorter production runs.

The econalypse could impact what a place like Amazon or B+H is willing to take as a viable profit margin.  That would be a bit of downward pressure.

The rebates expired in mid-January. Suddenly everything seems more expensive. Sorry you missed out. Somebody has a 40D and a 10-22 for sale on this board for a very good price, you might check.

I guess I'll have to bit the bullet if I go for a new camera, or look into the used market. Thanks all for the insights and suggestions.
