Good Camera Store in Buffalo??
« on: January 23, 2009, 09:08:56 am »

I'm looking for a good camera store close to the canadian border in Buffalo. I know the major online retailers are in New York, but there a couple of items I wanted to try rather then just order online that are unavailable in canada.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

good is pretty relative, the biggest one would be Delaware Camera  http://www.cameraspot.com/index.html Is there something in particular you are looking for?

My guess is you would be better off in Toronto unless you are looking to avoid GST

If you are on Flickr there is a pretty active Buffalo Group on Flickr (that I am also a memeber of) If you are looking for something special I would also post it there

Hi Wally,
I appreciate your reply.  I'm looking for the Gitzo 4 seasons Jacket.  This looks to be my best solution as not only a field jacket, but also being over weight on my carry-on limit.

It's not available yet at any canadian stores and is a special order with full amount due when placing the order.  I want to at least be able to see if to see if it is worth the high cost and how it fits, before putting up the money without seeing it.  Especially, since according to the sizing info, it looks like the sizing may not suit my build.

I could order it from Adorama and then return it if the fit isn't right, but it is a real hassle returning things cross-border through mail order.

No problem, however sorry to say I don't think you would find one in Buffalo. I pretty much have to order everything mail order from B&H or Freestyle

One thing you might try is a hunting/camping outlet. I am a pretty big guy 6'6" 300 lbs and I buy my photography vests/coats/jackets from Cabels. I find that the coats made for duck hunters are perfect for coldweather outdoor photography

This is the coat I use

Thanks again for the reply Wally!

I've checked at places like MEC and the problem with most jackets they have for hiking, the pockets are too small.  I think looking into a hunting jacket may work for me - I just need to find one in a solid color. I'm not much for the camoflouge look    But it getting a jacket like that and using something like optex lens wraps will cost a LOT less then the Gitzo jacket.

I hope it works for you. The duck hunting jackets have very large pockets in the front and the back. They make them big enough to stuff decoys or dead birds into, and since you hunt ducks around water and often in the fall or winter they are very weather/water resistant and warm. The only down side is that they seem to only come in Camo colors
