Eyelike DCS
« on: January 20, 2009, 11:59:02 am »

I just acquired a Jenoptik Eyelike DCS as a pet project. Even though it is an ancient back it can still capture around 37 MP in 32 shot mode in 12-bit. Not bad if you are patient and in the studio.

Does anyone have information about this back?

Are parts and lens adapters still available? Where?

Was PC software ever made for it? I have seen literature that says Mac and PC but have only seen the Mac software.

What Fiber Channel card do I need?

Any and all info is much appreciated.

It's not a fibre channel card but rather fiber optic. Two quite different things, and the Eyelike card is certainly a proprietary card not unlike those used with the later Eyelike and Sinar backs. I don't know whether they are interchangeable.

Thanks for the clarification. I have everything except the Fiber Optic card and computer.

Do you know any more information about the card and where I might be able to find one?

Do you know any thing else about the DCS?

I need to find an old Mac that will work with this system. Anything inparticular I should look for?

If I'm not mistaken, you'll need to find yourself the fastest Nubus Macs you can find. This typically means you will be running Mac OS 8.6 or perhaps even 9.0? The last Macs that had the Nubus expansion bus were the very first generation PowerMacs, and even if the Eyelike software isn't PowerPC native, it will probably still run in emulation, although I don't know what that'll do to the performance.

If I'm not mistaken, even the 2nd generation PowerMacs were already equipped with PCI expansion slots, so you'll be out of luck there. So this means you should either be looking for a Motorola 68040 powered Mac Quadra, or a PowerMac 8100/110. You'll typically be running the software on a computer that has a 66MHz - 100MHz CPU in it.

I've never seen or operated an Eyelike DCS myself though. Perhaps someone who has can provide something more specific.
