Seagate HDD Failure
« on: January 20, 2009, 03:39:07 am »

Hi,

it's not direct MFDB but many from us will have big HDD's for the pics ....

see:

http://seagate.custkb.com/seagate/crm/self...&NewLang=en

This is a nightmare, the first update don't detect the drive's. The second bricked the drive's ...
At the Moment there is no solution yet ...
... make Backup on non-Seagate Drives !!!

Greetings

I've always found Seagate to me one of the most reliable companies out there.  From the link you've provided, a simple firmware update will correct this condition.  Thanks for the heads up, though!

Seagate HDD Failure
« Reply #5 on: January 20, 2009, 10:12:39 am »

I have nine HDs which are affected by this problem and already updated five of them. They all run fine and I had neither data loss
nor boot problems. My Synology server (DS508) accepts updated drives with no rebuild - of course only if you don't take the drives
out while it is running.
For updating I used one of my MacPros with an additional Sonnet Sata card and an external Sata box (Sharkoon). Before doing any updating
I took out all internal drives. Then I booted the MacPro from the CD-ROM I burned in Toast 8 from the ISO image I downloaded from the
Seagate support site. The links seems to be down now - many people reported problems with the updater. The updater works here only
together with the Sonnet card, not with the internal Sata controllers of the MacPro. The whole procedure can work only with Intel Macs and 'regular' PCs with
accepted Sata controllers. Maybe that description is of some help for someone.
The whole thing is a catastrophy for Seagate, including how this mess is handled. As a reaction I bought two Samsung 1TB drives yesterday. My two support
tickets are not answered since nearly three days.

the problem is also for external USB/Firewire drives (LaCie , MobiDisk ...)

nice for update without open the external drive ...

we have here 2 from the ES.2 series, one drive had the failure on first connect

seagate have change this drive in a "Certified Repaired HDD" (this with the green Border)

"Certified Repaired HDD" ? i have ask the IT, the say:
Certified Repaired HDD -> Trash, don't use this

Are these hard drives in question built in a certain month or time frame I have 2 1tb drives that i purchased awhile back before December model ST3000340AS that are used as storage drives and not the OS. The issue for me is One drive has all my Final high res Tifs and the other my Raw files. Dangerous territory for me to lose. As they fill up I just replace the drives and put in a new one.

So - I'm trying to understand if my drives will be affected - they are currently working and I have them running regularly, and have for at least a month. Will they just melt down and stop
working? Also, being on a mac I can't find a way to see the firmware version - any suggestions?

Guy:

System Profiler (Mac) will show the model number, serial number and the firmware version without using their Windows tool. (Firmware is indicate as "Revision" in System Profiler, e.g. "SD15".) That is, provided the drives are internal. System Profiler does not help much with firewire connected drives.

In my case, my firmware versions are affected, but the fix has been pulled. I'm ordering more backup drives today to run some more SuperDuper! clones asap.

Right, Guy. That's what I would understand. SD04 is not listed. I have four drives which are affected. I'm ordering some backups right now.

Right. Two will remain untouched as they're manual mirrors and working now so I won't interact with them until the new ones arrive. Then I'll build my new clones and finally hope to update the affected drives.

I have the drives with SD15 firmware - but all seems to be working - what is the problem with these drives?

I had one out of five of this type, all with firmware SD15, shown as affected by the serial number checker Seagate had one day on its
support site - they pulled this page the next day. Nevertheless ... I updated all five to firmware SD1A. All five are fine so far.
