what to put my 4800 on?
« on: January 12, 2009, 09:59:36 am »

So I got my used 4800 yesterday and now I am trying to figure out what to put it on. Epson  makes a printer stand for the 4800 and while it is very nice its over $350 + shipping. I searched Ikea and a few other places but haven't found anything I really like, so I was hoping a few of you could chime in with your ideas. What do you guys put your 4800 on?

An interesting thing about the 4800 is that it produces a "snap" (jerk or bump) at the end of each pass of the head.  This causes the printer to shake which in theory shakes the ink carts.  The printer stand Epson sells is a fantastic piece of engineering.  It's strong enough to hold up to the shaking and it accommodates very well, specifically designed to allow for the stirring action.  The base is great for storing paper, ink, supplies, etc.  May be seemingly expensive but well worth it - definitely will outlast the printer and it looks great.  FWIW  |  YMMV

You may wish to check out a local Ikea to see if they have one of [a href=\'index.php?act=findpost&pid=0\']these[/a] in stock.  It was recommended to me and it has worked well for several years.

Natas......

I have an Epson 4880 which I believe is a similar footprint (?)?  I reviewed the table from Ikea that was mentioned in this thread but did not find it as stable or sturdy as I would have liked.  I ended up buying this one from Ikea and LOVE it.  Seems to me to be much more stable/sturdy than the other one that was recommended; but you need to pay about $100 US more for it.  I think mine was about $500 out the door with tax.

I've attached a photo of the stand and then one also with the printer box (Champagne bottle for size reference) (Sorry for the mess!).  Note that this stand has 3 drawers; I use the top one to let prints dry, the middle one to hold paper (holds 4 rolls of Epson 16 or 17 inch paper perfectly!), and the bottom drawer for framing and matting supplies.  This is a rock solid table and (my opinion) has better worksmanship than the other table.

Here is a link to the Ikea page:  http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/80099511

Best regards...

I use the one from Ikea named the Alex drawer unit.  It's ideal height and has several drawers that will accept 13x19 paper.  Over that and you will need other storage.

I use something similar, but made of metal. Its one of those drawers typographers used to use for film storage. Got it used for 60 Euros. It is very strong and will accomodate
the printer easily. A bit heavy though.

I have my Epson 7600 on a heavy duty wire shelf that has wheels and a wooden top.  I bought it from a kitchen store some yeas ago for about $100. It is very heavy duty and has worked well.

I cant' find the same one but it is similar to this only mine is taller and has the wooden top.  This kind of shelf would work well also. I like having it on wheels.

Whatever you use to support the printer, make sure you have plenty of access to the rear of the printer.  Mine sits nearly two feet from the wall and I find it invaluable when changing to or from roll paper or using the rear slot load.

Had this problem with my iPF5000 and solved it also at Ikea.

Trolley

Stainless steel, two shelves (I use for storing roll paper), lockable castor wheels, right size (and height) - almost perfect. Except it wobbled when the printer was working and looked decidedly unstable. So I had a local metalworker fit a thin stainless steel sheet wrapped around the sides and the back riveted to the legs and now - steady as a rock!
Perfect for my needs. Maybe yours too? Not sure what base area the Epson has.
