Epson 4880 workflow
« on: January 09, 2009, 09:53:29 pm »

I've just started using an Epson 4880 printer and I need help with the workflow. I use Harman FB Gloss paper and downloaded the profiles from Harman's website and the prints came out horrendously bad. The printer's heads are clean and it of course has a full supply of ink. Greens are coming out magenta, blues are coming out green etc.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks
Chris

Tell us more about your color management practices.... As written your question is vague and difficult to respond to without knowing more about your printing environment and workflow (although this was your question in the first place.)

Your mixed up colors sound more like user issues than printer issues...as a start.

I'm using a HP monitor (which has been colour calibrated) on a Mac G5 with Adobe CS3. I downloaded the Harman FB Gloss profile from their website and then assigned the profile in PS. Everything was printed through PS but there is no RIP, just Epson Printer Utility.

I just started using a 4880 and am knocked out by the quality of print it can produce. I really like the Epson Premium Luster Photo Paper, it has a surface similar to the old silver-based papers I used to use in my wet darkroom. As to your problem, the first thing that comes to mind is that you must have either PS or the printer doing your color management, not both and not neither. I assume the photo looks OK when you soft-proof it in PS.

I use Harman FB Matte quite often.  My 4880 makes great prints on it using a profile generated with EyeOne software.  So I am sure the system works well.
Still not enough details from you, but make sure of the following:  Print dialog is set to PS manage colors, your Harman Gloss profile is picked and printer management is turned off.

Do other papers work for you?  Have you run a nozzle check?
What paper do you choose in printer dialog when printing on Harman?

Another thought.
Go through the process in the proper order.  I have seen occasions where the printer dialog changes a setting it self if you go back and change some other setting.

Thanks for the replies. I won't be able to access the printer until Monday but will definitely follow some of the tips here

Have you double checked that your cartridges are in their proper places?

You can't go wrong with that... I think the cartriges cannot fit in different places on the 4880-7880-9880 and other Epson series.
Try using a normal Epson Paper with its profiles and tell us what happens next.

I ran a nozzle check today and everything looked ok. I tried the settings above but this time printed on a Permajet matt paper and the results were really nice. The colours are still ever so slightly out but miles better than before. I'll do some printing with the Harman FB Gloss again tomorrow and let you know how I get on.
