I've used Canon gear for some time but recently had the opportunity to acquire a Nikon D700. I own a Canon 70-300 DO IS that I use for travel/street photography - I like the inconspicuousness of this lens while walking city streets and taking candid shots.  If you know this lens you are aware that it isn't the sharpest lens on the planet. I hope to find an equivalent for the D700. I don't see an equivalent Nikkor lens and have been reading about the Tamron 28-300. The Tamron's size and range are nice but I'm curious how its build and image quality compare to the Canon. Does anyone have experience in using both the Canon 70-300 DO and the Tamron 28-300?  Any comments are appreciated.
