Only want 5 or 6 canvas gallery wrap sizes.
« on: January 07, 2009, 03:40:41 pm »

I have a new Epson 7900 and am setting up to do canvas gallery wraps. It seems every image I set up to print is a slightly different size. I want to order 2 sizes of frames for the 3/4" thick stretchers and 3 sizes for the 1 1/2" thick stretchers. I have someone making my frames at a great price but I need to figure out what the best 5 sizes would be to order. Better yet I need to find out how to get all images to come out to that exact frame size plus the wrap around. I am using Lightroom and Genuine Fractals 6.
Thanks

Lois,
When printing on the 3 canvas sizes I am using I need to get the same size print every single time and I am not getting that. Lets use the 24" canvas as an example. With 1 1/2" thick stretchers my face cannot be wider then 20" on the short size because of the 4" wrap. The long size could be 24" or 30" or 36". When I choose a 20" X 30" (face) gallery wrap the file needs to print 24" X 34" every single time regardless of the file I have chosen, and it is not. I am getting variations of 1/2" or more. With these premade stretcher frames I am buying the canvas has to fit and cannot be off at all.
The size of frame question was the second part of the question. I do not want to order 10 frame sizes. Maybe 6 at the most. I have 3 sizes of canvas I am printing on 13-17 and 24". I need to choose the approiate frame size for each of the 3 canvas sizes. Most importantly when printing the canvas it must match the frames. So what works? 24" canvas  maybe 20 X 24    20 X30   20 X 36. I do not know enough about the height versus width ratio to pick the right ones.
Remember again canvas and frames must match every time . Make sense?

Your borders in Lightroom are probably off.  It happened to me several times.

No its not the borders. As I change canvas print sizes the printable area size changes differently, its hard to explain.

Okay i am going to be trying the same thing with the 7900.  are you using the gallery wrap function in fract 6?  i am going to try it but i am new to strecthing canvas so still begining.  i have a 24" and 17" roll.  would love to know your workflow so i can try it and somehow come up with the same thing.  only buy the same size frames.

thanks

I am using Lightroom to PP and then sending to Genuine Fractals 6 through CS4.  The paper sizes and photo sizes in Genuine Fractals do not  measure up to the frame sizes I would like to have.
I have 13" ,17" and 24" canvas. I will be using the smaller 3/4" thick stretcher with the 13" canvas only.
With the 1 1/2" thick stretcher I lose 4" per height and width. With the 3/4" thick stretcher I lose 2 1/2" per height and width.
This is what I am thinking.
13" wide canvas    10 1/2" X 16 1/2" (gallery wrap face size)   13" X 19" - 2 1/2" per side -3/4" thick stretchers + 1/2" back
17" wide canvas    13" X 18"             (gallery wrap face size)   17" X 22" - 4" per side-1 1/2" thick stretchers + 1/2" on back
24" wide canvas    20" X 26"             (gallery wrap face size)   24" X 30" - 4" per side
24" wide canvas    20" X 32"             (gallery wrap face size)   24" X 36" - 4" per side
24" wide canvas    20" X 38"             (gallery wrap face size)    24" X 42" - 4" per side
Now if I pick the 5 gallery wrap face sizes picked above I have to make sure every image I print matches the frames exactly because all of the frames will be pre-made. When I go to the websites that sell canvas wraps none of the sizes I have here are listed on their sites. So now that you see them listed you can see the importance of making all the images fit the frames.
Anyone that can steer me to the right sizes?
Dan

According to the Premier Imaging Website, canvas often prints a bit small because it is thicker and therefore the print surface is closer to the inkjets and as a result smaller..  See explanation and link below. This may help you work out your problem.

Premier Art Canvas Instructions

[blockquote]NOTE: Since Canvas is thicker than the paper profile being selected, the actual image are will be smaller than anticipated.

In order to counter this shrinkage, the paper feed adjustment must modified in the driver.
From the driver,
         Advanced
               Paper configuration,
                     Paper feed adjustment
                               +40     9600
                               +45     7600
                               -50     10X00[/blockquote]

OKay so say i want a 20"x26" inch print.  are you choosing a 2" border in fract 6?  that gives you a 24x30 total print. so what size stretcher. do i get the size of the print face? i need to order some stretchers.  as far as paper feed i havent found anything on 7900 settings.  i tried +35, +50 and +40 don't really know which was better.  Seemed like +40 was good.

yes i used 24x31 on an Epson satin canvas roll.  i just did another one and it came out to 21x30.  used 24x33.  it also worked out for me. seems like 21" is the biggest i could go.  might be able to get 22" but it would be very close on the edge. this time i used the stretch soft method and seemed to like that one a little better for my image.  i bought the stretchers in a couple of different sizes i think i like the 21" bars and then i bought from 25"-30".  i was very surprised at how easy it was to get the bars together and stretch the canvas.  i need a little work on the corners but all in all i like it.

Still looking for someone that sells canvas wraps that can help me. What sizes are you offering your clients to keep the total number of sizes offered to 6 or less? I really want to order frames but I am still having problems with all the different file sizes. Trying to get different file sizes to match 2 or 3 frame sizes is just not working.

how much are you getting your frames for?  I bought bars from near me and they are about $.89 a bar for up to 21" and about $.95 for 25"-30". so i have been keeping from 17"-21" and 25"-33" around to make seom prints.

The price I am paying is 46 cents a running foot for 1 1/2" stretchers and then $1.75 per frame to assemble. (I received  a quote for about $20.00 per frame to assemble from a wholesaler believe it or not.) I do not want do assemble 10 different sizes when I can get them assembled this cheap. I guess I can call one of the internet Canvas Gallery Wrap firms selling alot of this stuff and see what their 6 most popular sizes are.

Thats a good price.  Can't believe they want that much to put together.  only took about 1 minute to put them together.  if i got them that cheap allready together i would go for it too.  Good luck and let us know what you come up with.
