Venice & Switzerland in winter
« on: January 07, 2009, 12:03:38 pm »

In a few weeks, I'll be in Venice for about a week followed by the Grindelwald/Lauterbrunnen region of Switzerland for several days.  I've been to both places once or twice during other times of year, but never before in mid-winter.  Does anyone here have any suggestions for winter photography in either place?  (Or any other generally useful suggestions?)

Thanks,
Lisa

Well Lisa, it seems no one has the advice you asked for. I don't either even though I lived in Switzerland for three years back in the 60's. I spent all that time in Ticino (Ascona) on the border with Italy and not in the alpine areas where you are going. Still beautiful country though. Venice - been there in the summer and always dreamed of returning in the winter to Venice under snow!
I've been watching this thread in the hope of learning something myself - come on folks, there must be someone out there with "knowledge"!
Cheers, Bob.

I'm waiting, too. I haven't yet been to either Venice or Switzerland, so I'm eagerly waiting to see Lisa's photos when she gets back.

Take the train from Venice to Switzerland.  It's the best advice I could give you. At least from Tirano, Italy to at St. Moritz, Switzerland: http://www.rhb.ch/  Stop in Pontresina.

I'm afraid you're a little late - I just got back a few days ago!  We did indeed take the train from Venice to Switzerland, though through Milan and Domodossola instead of the route you mention.  Some quite nice scenery on that route, too, once you get into the Italian lake country and beyond.

For those of you waiting for pictures, it typically takes me about two months to finish culling & processing the photos and then post them to my web site; I'll drop a note here when I do.  One preview:  There will be much snow!  We actually had snow one day in Venice (though not cold enough to stick), which a local told us only happens about once every five years.  Snowstorm for a couple of days in Switzerland, too, which eliminated any views other than of nearby snowy trees, but we had a couple of good days there before the storm hit.

OK, I couldn't resist posting this image, my favorite of the ones I've looked at so far from this trip:

Critiques welcome (keeping in mind that I was quickly snapping hand-held under somewhat dim light, so I know that it isn't as sharp as it could be).

Nice! I like his fancy footwork.

I look forward to the rest of the new portfolio.

If he's that close to the walls he might have to consider putting bumpers on his gondola!  Still, he seems to have the situation well in hand.  Or foot, in this case.

Mike.

Hello again to Eric, Mike & whoever...
After various delays, I *finally* finished working through the photos from the Swiss portion of my winter trip, and have posted them on my web site:

Enjoy!

Gorgeous as usual, Lisa.

My favorites (from Switzerland -- I need to study Venice on another session) so far are "Winter White" and "Peach Glow". But the prize for most endearing title goes to "Yet Another Snowy Ridge".

Hey, it's tough to come up with a unique descriptive name for the ninth or tenth photo of gorgeous snowy Swiss mountains!

Thanks, Eric.  Of all the places I've traveled, Switzerland is my favorite, and the one I keep going back to.  Next time will be summer again, though.  There's fine hiking in winter, but more in summer, and I found out on this trip that I like the green vegetation and waterfalls a bit better than the snow and ice!

I must say that this last winter we received an inordinate amount of snow. But I agree with you, while winter is nice, I also prefer summer.
