Mac OS X 10.3.3 Update & USB

I'm glad the update worked for you. I have the same problem, but I'm going to wait awhile as 10.3.3 appears to have caused other USB-related problems for some users.  See the MacOS X Panther (10.3.3) Special Report & scroll down to the "USB Memory devices" section.

Sorry for the delay in replying.  I've never had a problem with card readers connected to the built-in USB ports not being recognized after sleep (I use an Imation FlashGo! and another that's name escapes me now).  My G4 won't wake up when anything (an external USB 2.0 CD-RW or a USB 2.0 card reader) is connected to a SIIG USB 2.0 PCI card and powered up.  It will sleep and wake up just fine if the CD-RW is first powered down.  The card reader is always on, so I disconnect it after each use.

Some of us have had problems in the past with some USB 2.0 devices (specifically certain memory/card readers) after a Mac is put to sleep.  Sometimes the reader wouldn't be seen after the Mac was put to sleep and then woken up.  Very frustrating, and limited to certain card readers (others had no problems at all).

OS X 10.3.3 came out yesterday, and buried in the fixes :
Improves recognition of Hi-Speed USB devices by PowerBook G4 and iBook G4 computers when woken from sleep.

Applied it, so far no problems.  If your having these problems, get the update.  It might save some hair if your transferring  a lot of images and have one of the problematic readers.

Additionally, this added in iPhoto :
Images retain their characteristics when you import them in iPhoto

scottish, out of curiosity, was yours a SanDisk 2.0 USB reader?  I know of others who have had problems with SanDisk readers not being found after a Mac was put to sleep, and this is the one I have.
