Rollei Teleconverter Test
« on: January 01, 2009, 05:30:38 pm »

Bradley Gibson wanted me to test my recently acquired 300mm lens, 1.4, and 2.0 Longar converters. I thought others might be interested.

I make no claims to my testing abilities. I've never done this before. The light was changing. These aren't great exposures, but hopefully good enough to tell you something about the converters.

On a tripod with my Hy6 75Lv. Made into dng with eXposure. Made jpeg with LightRoom. No adjustments applied.

Best,

Mitchell

Crops at around 100% (I can view 100% crops in LR, but haven't figured out how to export them.)

Best,

Mitchell

Rollei Teleconverter Test

Thanks for testing.   I have done these tests for myself with 180mm lens by shooting buildings across the city from me and can say the 1.4x is a very good optic, hardly taking anything away at distance and also quite good close up.  I have also used the 1.4x with macro work with great results. With macro work its a very useful piece because it allows you to get to the same magnification with more distance for lighting between subject and lens or you can get higher magnification.  My Rollei close up manual recommends the extension to be put in between the teleconverter and lens, but I've done it both ways.

My 2x is not a perfect copy as it had fungus which was cleaned but left a few spots where the coating is missing.  Nonetheless it still performs admirably but the effect on sharpness is noticeable - I'd still use it if I needed the reach.    I have also used the 1.4x with the 2x on the 180 and don't recommend it.   The 1.4x does work beautifully with the 80/2, 110/2 180/2.8 - also works on the 55mm PCS lens.   I normally don't save these test files since they take up hard drive space so can't share any.

One other thing about the 2x that's worth mentioning.  This can be very easily converted to approx 50mm extension tube by removing the elements as a package - its just three phillips screws and the assembly slides out. It's keyed so it can only go back in one way into the same position.  Some of these have adjustment shims so you need to watch that they come off with the optic assembly.  I just put it into a plastic ziplock and the screws into another, then into a box for safe keeping. After you've done it once, you can repeat the process in about a minute.   So this makes it versatile in the travel kit.
