Kenco TC's

I'd like a teleconverter to use with my newly acquired lens. I don't forsee a great deal of use, but if I use the lens with either a D200 or D700 I'd like the capacity to increase the range on occasion. The price of the Kenko Pro converters seems attractive given that I have read generally positive comments, at least on the 1.4X version. I'm sure that the best option is to buy a Nikon TC however I'm already suffering from the purchase of the D700 and three 2.8's...

Does anyone have any experience of these products, both in terms of their image quality and general compatibility with this lens' functions? I'm thinking about the VR operation; not sure how the lens and body communicate in the case of this feature.

i have a kenko 1.4x for canon since it can be used on lenses that won't accept the canon tc.  it is not quite as sharp as the canon but very close and much more compact.  my recollection was that it was cheaper than the canon tc, but only 25% or so
