Hey Everyone,

Here is a an image from yesterday in Rocky Mountain National Park.  We went into the park to do some snowshoeing and this was the scene as we left the park.

Very nice.  Is the blue color on the mountains due to the soil, or is that influenced to some degree by the sky (the non-red part of the sky)?

The blue color on the mountains is because the mountains were in shadow and because of the low temps.   I'm sure there are other reasons.

I like the image.  I did find the blue color too dominant, and as such conflicting for attention with the clouds.  Here's a modified version :

You must know, out here in the real world away from the LL site, most people have a LOT of information in their digital images that is begging to get out and be seen, as is the case with these edits that reveal textures and colors we might otherwise miss.  Now I'm no fan of popularizing things by pandering to the lowest common denominator, yet, I would so much like to see some kind of utility that a beginner or low-tech digital user could run on some of their images, to produce even part of the effect seen here.  Is that an impossibility, or just not doable without a major user interface?  I can't get most people to try even the simple edits I do to my photos, let alone use advanced PS features.  So, if there were a way to create a utility package with, say, 20 canned features that improve digital images, I could sell that.

So, Alain what did you do to modify the image to get rid of the blues?

Hi Joel,

I desaturated the blues  (Hue/Saturation in Photoshop) and opened the shadows (curves in Photoshop).

I also saturated the reds/orange in the clouds.

Nice image by the way :-)
