Matte papers and white spots
« on: December 29, 2008, 01:16:59 pm »

For years I have printed on matte papers (Permajet Museum Classc and Hahnmuhle Photo Rag).
I am very pleased with the general appearance (B&W)
But those papers are so sensitive to scraping during handling of the prints.
Even handling with care and stacking prints seems to create white spots in the darker areas.
So I have been testing with Photo Rag Baryta type of papers.
Very beautifull results (D-max) and very resistant to scratching.
But every time I pick up on old matte print, I have to admit to myself that I like it more then the semi-gloss look.
You can look at a matte print from different angles without seeing reflections and therfore it has more "depth".

So my question is:
- is there a matte paper which has a better resistance to scratching and flacking
- if not, what could i do to prevent white spots on my matte prints

Thanks in advance,   Rene

I am certainly no expert on the issue and I don't use it myself, but Hahnemuhle produces a protective spray for its papers.  I'm not sure if the spray is designed for their matte papers or not, or if it's designed to protect from said problem, but it may be worth checking out.

By the way, I've also noticed this problem, and it is quite annoying when a nearly perfect print is ruined by scratching.  I hope there is a reliable solution out there!

I use a wide paint brush to brush each sheet prior to printing to remove loose patches.  Once printed, I spray each print with Lyson Print Guard.  Don't suffer the problem any more!

I too use a brush with the Hahnemuhle Photo Rag sheets, and spray them with Premier Art Print Shield. Unfortunately I haven't found a way to pre-brush the paper when printing from rolls, so I just try to be really careful when handling the prints before spraying them and hope for the best.
