Archos 20GB HD MP3 player + digital wallet
« on: January 21, 2004, 12:33:19 pm »

I would be uncomfortable storing my pictures on the same device that I used for listening to music.  The MP3 player is going to be out in the open too often, too many opportunities for leaving it (and your pictures) on a restaurant table, on the seat of a bus, ....

Copying with a thorough verification process would be great.

It's probably a lot better to reformat in camera.

I do like the $200 price of the 120... I'm tempted to get it and put up with the controlls unless someone knows of something better for that price.

I like the idea of adding my own hard drive like the Vosonic XS-Drive Pro does, but I haven't found an American store that sells it.

Interesting product.  Using 1.8" HD to make it so compact.  Can be compared with Creative MuVo2 4GB MD MP3.

Can be used as digital wallet for CF card as well.

A member of another forum I belong to did a short review of the smaller model (120). He stated the navigation stank and unloading pics to it was a multi-step process.

I'd be curious as to how this one performs. Archose is pushing this as a MP3 player first and a digital wallet (DW) third wich hints to me that unloading you pics would not be an easy matter. I'd like a DW where I insert the card and press a button and it automatically copies/verifies/formats the card.

I'd rather focus on photography than my DW

I have an older Archos Jukebox Multimedia with a 20Gb HD.  It came with an adapter to transfer files from a CF card to its hard drive.  I have used it to transfer data files and it has worked quite well.

I'm curious about using it for field transfers of photos.  The transfers were painless - basically choose a folder and press transfer.

I'll give it a try in the next few days. If nothing else, it is more convenient than carrying a laptop while hiking, although having a few CF cards or microdisks would probably be better.

The biggest problem has been its battery life.  About 3 hours of operation and they can't be replaced, only recharged.
