Where to buy camera in UK/London?
« on: December 18, 2008, 02:51:09 pm »

British pound is so low that it has become very attractive to buy camera gear in the UK for mainland Europeans. I'm planning to go visit London in a few weeks, and am seriously considering 5D MkII.

What's a good place to buy camera gear in/near London? How are stocks of 5Ds at the moment?

Wandered into Jessops and Jacobs on New Oxford Street earlier today on way home. Both have the 5DMk2 + 24-105mm kit in stock and in their window. The camera body only is not in stock and they refuse to split the kit or replace with alternative lens.

How's the pricing? Though I'm interested in body-only...

You'll need to get a move on. A number of Japanese companies have already announced they will raise prices after Christmas.

While most follow the USD trend, GBP has devalued significantly against Yen. To put that in context: in the last 52 weeks GBP has lost some 41% of it's value against JPY compared to 24% against EUR.

Price for the 5D Mk2 + 24-105mm lens was just under £3000 (£2985?). The advertised price for body only is £2251 - but no availability of body only yet.

Jessops are not the cheapest. I would try camerworld (http://www.cameraworld.co.uk/) or Calumet (http://www.calumetphoto.co.uk) or London Camera Exchange (http://www.lcegroup.co.uk/).
I know nothing of their stock of 5D2 but you can always call them to check or their website may have information.
