Will 7900 print letter size paper?
« on: December 08, 2008, 05:23:00 pm »

Hello Everyone,

I'm new to this forum and would appreciate learning if the 7900 will easily and reliably print letter size paper?

My 4000 has died and for once I would like to get on top of the Epson technology curve, not buy a printer and have the new model be released in 3 months. With the 4000 I've been printing 17/22 but do need letter size for some commercial work.

Additionally, I'm guessing with the 7900 that I won't need the Colorburst RIP that I used with the 4000 to get neutral B&W.

Thanks for your thoughts.

the link you want is:

http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/support...rodoid=63079721

click on 'users guide' - and you'll see the complete 7900 /9900 users manual.

according to that user's guide re: cut sheet
the 7900 will handle cut sheets - from letter size to 24" / up to 36" in length.

you can usually find manuals for most of their pro prints on the Epson site.

Like all 24 inch printers (except for one odd older HP which had a 17 inch tray, although it would take 24 inch rolls), the 7900 has no paper tray. The only way to print letter sized sheets is to load them MANUALLY, one sheet at a time. It's probably worth having a 3800 or a Canon iPF 5100 around for letter sized printing (both are 17 inch printers that take large ink cartridges (so running costs are more reasonable than smaller printers) and have paper trays. Of course, your other option is to use 11 inch roll paper on the 7900 when you want to print letter size - it'll print and cut that just fine. I have an iPF 5000 (the older version of the 5100 I recommended), and I print almost everything on 17 inch rolls, but I have run a few boxes of letter size through the tray, and it works fine - you can get a 25 sheet pack of thick art paper in without a problem...

Dan,

Thanks for mentioning the 11" roll paper. I hadn't thought of that. I've considered the 3800 but money is an issue for me in considering two printers. Really what I need is a 4900 but of course they don't exist and Jeff Schewe mentions in a post that he doesn't see them on the horizon in the foreseeable future. I don't think I'd mind feeding the 7900 manually if the procedure worked easily and accurately without a  lot of daily hassles lining up the paper. I'd like to go to the 7900 mostly for the new ink and head technology that doesn't clog and partially for the 24" width.

I appreciate your thinking,

Our 7900 prints easily and accurately on 8.5x11 paper. We've tried Epson Luster 260, Moab Somerset Velvet, Arches Infinity, and Epson Enhance Matte, and uncoated watercolor paper cut sheets in this size. Although you do feed the sheets manually, the new printer's cut sheet system is greatly improved: simply drop the sheet into the path, line its right edge with a reference line, press the down arrow key to 'grab' the paper. Accuracy/registration is excellent. Even works on paper with a deckle edge on the end fed into the printer!

Thanks. I received my 7900 yesterday and have just run a few prints but I'm pleased to agree with your assessment. It looks like that isn't going to be a problem. Good luck with your new printer.
