LR2 Camera Profiles
« on: December 02, 2008, 10:00:35 pm »

Amidst all of the performance complaints and problems may folks have with printing, I have to say the new Camera Profiles are a huge success. They are a fundamental change to the application that completely changed my impression and attitude toward LR. My new Canon G10 forced me to go back to DPP until the ACR 5.2 DNG Converter came out, and when I did some comparisons: LR2-DNG to DPP, the LR2 images were so much better. The colors were very close but the LR2 images had a depth and range that wasn't evident in DPP. I've noticed as well that all cries of "my image look different in LR" have disappeared from the forums since the Camera Profiles release, always a good sign.

I'm pretty sure Eric Chan was instrumental in their development, possibly others that frequent this forum. Would like to let them know that their work is admired and appreciated.

Morey-
I've had similar (spectacular) results with the DNG profiles, in both my own work and my clients'/students.

For several years I'd been doing the ACR-Calibrator routine, also with excellent results. But the Adobe profiles (beta as they may now be) provide vastly improved rendering of all the flavors of raw files I've put through them.

I shoot Canon, as do may of my clients, but also lots of Nikon. In every case, applying one of the new camera profiles provides dramatically improved rendering of the "baseline" files - reducing the need for additional processing.

The hardest part is choosing which rendering I like best! (TIP: use Virtual Copies for this; you can put them in Survey and compare them side-by-side.)

I share your interest in expressing kudos and gratitude to the team at Adobe for putting this all together. I'm eager to see what's next in terms of a final public release.

It just keeps getting better!!

He's modest so I'll say, yes, he had much, if not all to do with this (but lets thank Adobe for bringing him onboard).

Eric had a LOT to do with it, yes...no question that bringing Eric onboard jump started a project that, uh, languished in "other's" hands. But don't forget the guy at the helm, Thomas Knoll who conceived of the DNG Profile project in the first place to address these issues. Eric just did all the hard work (actually doing the profiles and writing the DNG Profile Editor).

I'm constantly amazed that most people think that "Adobe" is this great big monolithic corporation and don't realize that most everything good done by a "big company" usually comes down to a few (in Camera Raw's case, 3 core engineers plus product management and QE engineers) who actually do the work and get good things done.

Sad for sure but since we have no idea what jobs are being lost we have no idea how this might impact Adobe's technical prowess with their products.

Layoffs for all companies are going to be a way of life for the foreseeable future.  Welcome to the global recession.
