Epson 3800s are starting to disappear...

...from store shelves.  B&H, Adorama, and Calumet are all out of stock of the Pro Edition.  Is there an announcement of its replacement in the very near future?

I'd sooner attribute that to the Pro Edition being nearly worthless than any forthcoming replacement (especially since the standard and portrait editions are still in ample supply at the usual places).

More realistically, it may be a case of pressing a run of discs with the current Epson version of ColorBurst; 5.8 came out a while ago but they've still been packing in the 5.7 discs. This seems to be the right answer, as the 880 series printers are also largely out of stock in the Pro Edition alone.

Part of it is probably that it's actually cheaper to buy the Pro model than the Standard right now at some vendors.

The pro rip doesn't allow best fit of a group of images to a sheet size, so I don't see much reason for that rip version. Seems pointless, it's a reduced feature rip specifically for Epson.

The "Pro" version is ONLY designed to do CMYK proofing on Epson papers to adhere to SWOP certifications and it does that very well. If you DON'T need CMYK proofing there is no reason to get the pro version...

Does anyone know about a equivalent european ECI version? I believe SWOp is more US standard while ECI is more common in Europe. When I bought my 3800, July 08, I was not aware about a Pro version here. May be there was none in Ireland/rest of Europe, no idea.

summary: great rebates available for Epson 3800 and 4880  = Pro price same as standard until 12/31/08

I just recently purchased the 3800 Pro after some hard searching and comparing.  My reasons for the Pro had to do with the rebate taking the price down to that of the standard.  I do not yet know how to use the RIP but it came out to no additional cost after the rebate.  I also did quite a bit of searching and talking to folks trying to determine if the reason for the rebates was a forthcoming version release across the board of new printers from Epson.  The answer seems to be a unanimous "no."  Interesting note:  I was very tempted to buy the 4880 since after rebates with the available purchase prices the difference between the net cost of the 3800 and the 4880 including shipping was only $110.oo - Given my infrequent personal use of the printer I couldn't see moving to a machine that prefers rolls of paper, even though the operating costs look much better for the 4880 than the 3800.  Additionally it's like another 40lbs of hardware and real estate in my den closet is already cramped with the storage, the fax, laser printer, scanner and the old HP photo color.

I'm extremely happy with the performance of the 3800.  just incedible results and knowing they'll last at least as long as I live is a relief since the fading of the dye inks on photos I'd printed from my HP7550 came as a surprise to me.  I found that my technical knowledge of printing was lagging the depth I have elsewhere in technology.

One area I didn't consider when researching printers was the life of the ink in the transport system between the cartridges and the print head and whether I should be worrying about clogging of it as little as I print.  I'm new, maybe the answer is in another forum here.

Thanks for sharing your experience Nelson!  Sounds like you were in the same boat as me.  I'll be getting a 3800 this week.

Does that include the Standard model?  It was previously limited to the Portrait and Professional versions.  Thanks Jim.
