Lens conversion adapter for Mamiya 7??
« on: November 22, 2008, 11:02:10 am »

I have tried without luck to find any type of adapter that would enable any other LF or MF lens to be mounted on a Mamiya 7 apart from the original OEM Mamiya 7 line-up.  Why is that?

Because most people are very happy with the existing lens lineup from Mamiya.

I would be too if I didn't have to fork out USD1000+ for a used Mamiya 7 50mm lens. Its actually cheaper for me to buy a used Mamiya 645 AFD body for the great Mamiya 645AFD wide angle lens I bought recently for half the price.

If lens quality was the reason why would anybody buy a converter like this one to mount a Nikon lens on a Leica?

Anyway my point is not to moan about the price of Mamiya 7 lenses. It is just that exploring different possibilities tweaked my curiosity. What is it about the Mamiya 7's leaf shutter that makes it so difficult to adapt, since it seems that converters exist for just about every other type of lens & body combo.

errr... focus???

hadn't thought about that...

but if focus can work on a system like this on an SLR body:

http://www.phootos.com/orphanFrame.htm?htt...m/vcc_digit.htm

then why not on a Mamiya 7?

I guess the main difference is that SLRs use a mirror for a TTL focussing system while the M7 is a rangefinder. But the old 4x5 press cameras like the Graflex also had rangefinder focussing systems (similar to the M7's) mounted on top of the camera - just as the M7 OEM wide angle lens do.

Now practicable... well that is another question

I afraid, that VCC costs more than 50/4.5 (BTW - I highly recommend that lens).

But - if you really insist that you want to install some LF lenses on M7, then maybe that   will inspire you:

It should work like a charm - as soon, as you'll figure out how to couple the plunger to the rangefinder...

So it IS possible to mount a LF lens on a Mamiya 7; looks like all I need is a Polski Fiat gearbox... don't understand the instructions for focussing though...."a matter of squeezing the lens down, and twirling it around"..... Maybe after I figure this out I will take the plunge®
