While I like the possibility to change a sentence or a word just after the message is made available in a thread I do not like to make adjustments later on that change the meaning of that message. If more information becomes available or I made a mistake right away then I like to add an extra comment with the word edit at front + the date the edit is made. In fact not an edit but an addition. Mainly to avoid confusion by the reader who doesn't follow the entire thread to the end.

Could the forum policy/software settings be changed and allow a normal edit within 5 minutes after the message has been placed and after that only additions with the date of the addition at the front of that addition ?  I have seen threads bended and twisted with edited or deleted messages in the past and recently. In a way mailing list threads show more consistency and there I can live with some spelling errors or a badly constructed sentence (mine mostly :-)

Ernst,

You might want to post this in the 'About This Site' forum http://luminous-landscape.com/forum/index.php?showforum=12
More likely to catch one of the moderator's eye.

Now your five minutes are over and you can't edit your message, and even if you did, it would still appear in my message.

Let us praise the blessing of full quotes. But nobody likes to see bible thick threads here.

Uh, Ernst, I did a full quote only to illustrate your point. Note that I haven't quoted you now, and if either of us edited our earlier messages, it would be difficult to understand what was being said.

Perhaps full quotes are not your cup of tea, but I use them after being burned on other forums by the original poster returning and changing their post... so that my reply made no sense.

I agree with you on the need for a limited ability to change errors soon after posting.

I feel this should be in the realm of "recommended courteous behavior" rather than an unbreakable rule. I tend to do what Ernst suggested: If I see a bad typo within about five minutes (usually in less than one), I will correct it without adding the word "Edit" added. I agree that posters should be strongly discouraged from making changes later on that affect the substance of the post. If necessary, one can edit, adding a rephrasing, with something like this: "Edit: What I meant to say in the third line was ... "

-Eric M.

Edit: I just edited this post to add the comment that I prefer posts that are short enough so that a "full quote" isn't burdensome. Posts longer than about ten lines I seldom read anyway.
