Perfect timing -- I was thinking of getting the Tamrac 5693, which is a bit larger, to have a bit more room. . . .  How do you think the two compare.  Does the 5692 fit the G10 with the L bracket attached?  And if you take the L bracket off, is there room to put the L bracket in the front pocket of the 5692?  . . .  Also, I'm thinking of getting a Voigtlander viewfinder I'd want to carry around with it.  Do you think there would be enough room in the 5692 front pocket for an external viewfinder (or even two)?  Thanks in advance for your help, Marc.

How do you like the RRS L plate?  I'm thinking of getting one but wonder how it affects the bulk and balance of the camera.

I'm using the Lowepro D-Pod 50, which can carry a spare battery (a little tightly) and spare SD card.  It SHOULD be able to accomodate the RRS L plate; the main compartment has room to spare with the G10.  My main criterion was keeping size and bulk down.

Marc,

Forgive me for asking, but how do you intend to use the G10 with the L bracket on?

My personnal view is that if I carry a tripod along, then I might as well take the DSLR, so I'd be interested in hearing your intended usage pattern for this combo.

Thanks.

Cheers,
Bernard

I'm not Marc, but I received the "L" bracket today.  It fits snugly and is light, adding about 2 ounces.  I will probably leave it on a lot of the time.  I plan on carrying a tripod a lot of times with the camera.  At iso 80, I think it gives results that are comparable to the Canon 5D, at least on resolution (or perhaps offers even better resoultion), though I haven't done any a/b comparisons, and I do expect that dynamic range is substantially less than with the 5D.  I plan on doing panoramic stitching at times. . . .  I see this as a very viable alternative to a DSLR.  It is a lot lighter and more compact for travel.  It is also an interesting compliment to a DSLR, as a second camera. . .  It offers very interesting possibilities because of the excellent macro possibilities, and because of the extensive depth of field.

1. The G10 fits the 5692 with the L bracket installed nicely
2. I didn't look at the 5693 so I cannot comment
3. The front pocket is too small for either the L bracket or an external viewfinder
4. The main purpose for the G10 vs. small DSLR is to fit in my flight bag (with manuals, headset etc.)
5. The reason for the L bracket is mainly when I EBay something I can put the G10 on a small tripod and get a better shot
6. The intent was not for a "pocket-able" camera
7. I'm in front of you tonight admitting I'm a cameraholic and need help!

Marc,

I too have both a 5D (old style) and a new G10. Your mention of using an L-bracket on the G10 reminded me of a picture I wish I'd taken years ago when I still had an 8x10" view camera. I also had a "pistol grip", a little gizmo with 1/4" tripod screw threads for use on a 35mm camera. I wanted to do a self-portrait hand-holding the 8x10 with the pistol grip. Sort of the reverse of your G10 with an L-bracket.

I hope your tripod weighs at least 10 pounds to provide good stability for the G10!

Mark,

Thanks for the heads up on the Tamrac bag.

Do you use a hand strap or shoulder strap for the G10?

I just received the Tamrac 5693, which is the next size up from the 5692.  It's a perfect fit for the G10, from my perspective at least.  The camera fits nicely and snugly, with or without the RRS L plate on it.  It's well padded.  It has enough room in the front pocket for an extra battery, and a few other small items.  It's all a matter of different user preferences of course, but I wouldn't want smaller.  I might want slightly larger, though this will suit me excellently (and if I had slightly larger, I'd probably want a bag slightly smaller).

FWIW I use the Lowepro AW 60 with my G10. It's probably about the smallest case available that will still hold the camera. It has enough room for a spare SD card, though I'm not sure about a spare battery; haven't gotten mine, yet. I like the fact that it attaches to my belt. Or, if you so choose there's a shoulder strap, too.

Here is another case that looks really nice. Kind of a throwback to many years ago.

It is not cheap though,

It is an OEM from Canon SC-DC60A
