What makes CS4 tick?
« on: November 01, 2008, 02:50:38 am »

Hi guys,

Ok we know that Photoshop likes fast CPU's, lots of ram and super fast spinning hard drives, but the unknown is the graphics card? I don't think CS4 is ready for SLI or Crossfire yet.

Nvidia, would like us all to buy their new Quadro CX...what is it US$2000...hmm I think not! but what does the guru's and the people in the know of CS4, what is it that make CS4 tick in a graphics card, is it the amount of it has, the number shaders....??

any takers

thanks

Henrik

You do not need a Quadro card to get great GPU performance with CS4. The GeForce line is quite sufficient for this.

thanks madmanchan,

I am aware of that, it still does not answer the question    but thanks for trying

by the looks of it, it is a topic a lot of people is interested in, look at the number of views. I would have thought, that some of the beta-testers would have known the answer to this question. Unfortunately I didn't get my shit together in time, to get on the Adobe performance testing team, sorry Adam and Jack

So any one? Do I really have to figur this one out myself :-)

what makes one graphics card, run Photoshop CS4 faster then the others? anyone got a suggestion as how best to test this? I want to get a new card, as I just broke on of my two quadro cards and since they are getting a bit old, it sounds like it is time to see if adding a better card will make CS4 puurrr ...run faster. Now since I also use other application with in the CS4 family I am interested in what makes the whole CS4 suite tick. Also of interest would be the quality of color these cards can produce and if they are making any different on wide gamut screens.

thanks for looking

Are you running a DVI or HDMI connection?  If so everything is digital so I wouldn't worry about the card's output.

Of the consumer cards the AMD 4850 and 4870 series is quite nice.

Haven't played enough with CS4 to know much about it.  Not really sure why I purchased it since I do just about everything in LR these days.

just adding this, as this seems to be the official line from Adobe
http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewConten...rnalId=kb404898

You can also get to this link from within Photoshop CS4 under HELP -> GPU

thanks

Henrik

PS: thanks DarkPenguin - yes they are two very good room heaters :-) too! have you had a look at how big these two cards are? but not bad on the price though

They're certainly nice in the winter.  (At least the 3850 was.  No reason to expect my 4850 to not be the same.)
