Nikon P6000 and Canon G10 Duke it Out
« on: October 29, 2008, 12:13:02 am »

Something I did not see mentioned in Michael's comparison: The Nikon P6000 has a built-in GPS receiver. My first tests with this camera suggest that it works quite well. Shooting location can be displayed in Google maps, for instance, with a simple mouse click from the Nikon software (View NX). This is a big plus for anyone who uses a camera professionally in the field as I do. Also, although no dedicated ISO button, the adjustment does not require going into any menus: simply hold the function button and select ISO with the command dial.

Interesting!
How does it impacts the camera's battery life? Can it be turned off?
I'd imagine the cocordinates are simply written in the dedicated EXIF field?

There are many features on both cameras that I didn't mention due to lack of time and space. The GPS is cute, but since I personally don't need it I didn't explore it.

Yes, the GPS feature can be turned off, and it was turned off when I started the camera up for the first time. That, in iteself, suggests that it is a power hungry feature but I have not tested it.
To my knowledge, this is only the second camera with built-in GPS. Seems worth a mention to me.

One should never contemplate any sort of equipment purchase unless it comes with Internet photography expert Ken Rockwell’s blessing. So it will no doubt be an enormous relief to Michael that Rockwell largely concurs with his assessment of the G10.

Yes, KR likes the camera. I haven't been to his site for a long while, so I found some things a bit odd. He has some pretty quaint notions about pixels, RAW and things.

I just wondered how the image quality compares with the Canon Xti? I've found the G10 at $318 including shipping and need a pocketable camera.

Which store?  If it's from the 1st link you get when you Google the camera then check resellerratings.com before you buy!  The only store I saw with that price had HORRIBLE feedback...

If it's too good to be true, then it probably isn't true.  Beware of scammers and check:  http://www.resellerratings.com/

If you want to go "belt-and-suspenders" with G10 camera support, I just found out that Really Right Stuff is prototyping a G10 L camera plate:

You have to understand that the $318 camera is the cheap plastic G10 made in Vietnam. If you want the good metal Japanese G10 it's $600 plus $250 shipping. And you have to pay extra for the battery and charger.

(I only wish I were making this stuff up. Check resellerratings.com before buying from anybody with a price lower than B+H or Adorama.)

You forgot to mention that the "Vietnamese" version of the camera will not be available for several months.  Yeah, I heard the same bait and switch, swindler's script.

Thanks all. I found that too. They eventually come through but not without a hassle.
