Wireless Shutter Activation for Hy6
« on: October 27, 2008, 07:10:37 pm »

I'm close to buying a Hy6. There are no long shutter release cables available (or I think planned.)

Is there a 3rd party wireless shutter release?

I want to shoot wildlife with camera on tripod and myself 40 feet or so away.

Thanks for any help.

Best,

Mitchell

if you can get the motor drive connector (from a short cable release), remove it and resolder it onto a long stereo cord, you can link it up to a Pocketwizard for remote firing, PROBABLY.
I've done this for a few cameras to save myself from paying pocketwizard's ludicrous prices for their motor drive cords and all seem to work fine.

This is one of the things I really wish they had kept from the older 6000 series cameras.  There were a plethora of options out there for remote triggering including an IR trigger set and I've seen custom built radio units that had both mirror up and shutter activations.   Pocket wizard cables can be ordered pre-made too for the shutter.

I guess you can get a remote shutter control now and lengthen the wire.....

actually all those strange methods of activation are quite easy to homebrew...I was at the electronics area nearby and came across all these weird switches they use for industrial purposes.
I'm sure they can all be used to make a remote of sorts.
Yup I'm sure the wire can be lengthened just by replacing one end of a long cord with the hy6 motor drive tip and the other with a remote release.
bring it down to your local wire guy he should have some suggestions (mine specialises in dealing with  audio and data cables...)

Thanks Jing Q and Eric.

If I understand correctly there a solution from Pocket Wizard?
I'll check out their website.

I'm all thumbs so would prefer a pre-made solution.

Mitchell

Hi Mitchell
I've been using Pocketwizard II Transceivers to remotely trigger the cameras I've owned (1Ds MkII and Mamiya AFd)
Both work the same way: you need one Transceiver on the hotshoe of the camera, with a wire with a stereo connection to the Camera/Flash port of the Transceiver. The other end of the wire should have the Hy6 cable release connector, and that end should be inserted in to the Hy6 cable release port.
Set the channel of the Transceiver to Channel 2, and trigger the camera using a Pocketwizard set to channel 2. (You can use any channel, just using 2 as an example)

The MultiMax from Pocketwizard also works but it's more complicated, I find.

I am not sure if Pocketwizard has made a connector yet but your local audio cable or computer cable guy should be able to solder you a connector if you bring them a Hy6 cable release and a stereo cable.

Thanks a lot Jing Q.

That's clear enough that even I can understand it. Very helpful.

Somewhere in this forum it was reported that F&H would make remote releases with custom cable lengths. If you can use a cable, this should be simplest and most reliable.
