Lighting Question
« on: October 25, 2008, 01:33:43 pm »

first of all, sorry if I'm posting this on the wrong forum,
but I think here there is more experience and knowledge than in any other one.

How can you achieve this look? I know, good make up / hair artist, post, etc is essential, but what about lighting ?
it looks like a large diffused source placed on the right side and one reflector on the bottom left,
but how big and how far? what type of modifier could be used. I want to read your opinions. Thanks!

The light looks too focused and has a harder edge, I highly doubt its a large diffused source. Also look at the specular highlights.

Zoom on the model's eyes. Your answer is always there. You can see the light source reflection of the frontal lighting.

Looks like a large light source off to the right. There's another light providing overall fill to keep the contrast down. Probably bounced into a large flat or opposing wall to diffuse it. I'm guessing that there's a flag that was brought in to keep the light off the right half of the face. The thing that's throwing you off on this photo is the makeup. Some sort of shiny makeup was used to create the large specular highlights on the nose, near the eye and above the lips. That has the effect of appearing like a harder light was used even though it's overall a very soft effect.

Nice lighting and makeup though.

Thanks. I think I have seen him use that model, hair down, in a "victorian" set. Looks a bit "restrained" though for him. He does use some interesting lighting.

Right side large rectangular softbox, left side open reflector most likely gridded and flagged out on the face.
