z3100 24" or 44"
« on: October 22, 2008, 12:21:23 pm »

With the current prices in Canada I am ready to pull the pin on one of these.  There is a $900 price difference between the 44" and the 24".  I figure about $300 of that would be made up for by the extra ink received with the 44" 130ml cartridges versus 69ml for the 24".  Any pros or cons to weigh the decision one way or the other?  If you bought one do you regret not having bought the other?

Thanks for any help.

The 44" is big! make sure you have room for it. Also, it is really designed for the wider paper- apparently the self cleaning cycles work off of # of head passes, so it happens more with narrower paper. If you are rarely going to print on larger rolls, keep that in mind. That said, for me it was a no-brainer, and I paid alot more than $300 extra.

If you've got the room for it then go for it.  In the long run the 44" will probably be more versatile.

I had a 24", but I moved up to the 44".

Here's one good reason why: With canvas, figure you need three inches of extra material top and bottom to do your gallery wrap and stapling. With 24" canvas, that means the face of your print can never be larger than 18" on the short side. For me, that's just too small for living-room or gallery-size art. With the 44" printer using 42" canvas (the most common size), you can get 36" on the short side of your print. That means an uncropped image from my camera can measure up to 36" x 54". Now, we're talking! (I do print on that extra three inches of canvas, it becomes the edge of the gallery wrap.) Oh yeah, my 44" Z3100 has taken up residence in the living room.

It's a no-brainer, other than the space it occupies, there is no reason for not buying the 44inch. the big printer opens the door to a lot of possibilities. The old saying that you can never be too rich really applies very well.

If you have room go for the biggest you can. Everything is the same, plus a larger maximum width.
24" seems small after you have had a 44".

Thank you all for your input.  DotCom Editor after I posted I saw your post on the canvas issue and that definitely helped me decide to go for the 44". I have put in the order (printer is on backorder, but expected to be in on Oct 27).  So, should ship next week.  It is going to take up residence in the living room, displacing the much unused electric piano.

Any thoughts on extended warranty.  Having looked through the forums there seems to be some very vocal people who are not happy with HP, but many others who have had great experiences.  I was thinking of an additional 1 year (2 years total) on-site for around $300.  Is it needed?

Thanks again everybody.

Definitely go for the 44" if you've got the cash and the space; now that I'm doing a lot of stitching, I regret being limited to 24" maximum height for panos. However, I believe you're incorrect regarding the ink cartridges, unless HP actually ships the bigger printer with full-sized carts—which would be dumb on their part from a purely mercenary perspective. Both printers use identical carts; the smaller 69 ml carts are just the 'starters' the printer comes with. Replacements are all 130 ml for both printers.

The last I knew the 44" shipped with 130ml carts.  Only the 24" came with the 69ml "starter" carts.

That is correct, the 44" comes with 130ml cartridges.
