Instant printers for professional use
« on: October 14, 2008, 08:33:48 am »

I would like to see an instant printer but:

1. For much larger formats (A4 or 8x12' or larger).

2. With very high resolution (400 pixels per inch or higher).

Decades ago I would sometimes enlarge transparencies on Polaroid 8x10 film.  Made a crude wood thing to support the Polaroid back underneath the enlarger.  Can you still get 8x10 Polaroid?  Dunno.  I seem to recall this was not a cheap way to go.

You can also enlarge directly on SX-70 film in the same way.  Take the cartridge out of the camera, put it in a holder, make the exposure, pop the cartridge back in the camera and it will automatically eject the print.

I hear those newfangled inkjet printers are pretty decent too.

Well, I have found these notes:

Reviews, lists, links, info on dye-sub printers and pre-press proofers.

Kodak, Olympus and Fuji have professional dye-sublimation printers...

The Kodak Professional 1400 printer is very interesting, but it was discontinued. The KODAK PROFESSIONAL 9810 Digital Photo Printer is too expensive.

I think these dye-sublimation printers for A4 or larger formats are very interesting printers, but the prices are too high...

IMHO, the most interesting technology for printing is the Zero Ink (Zink):

The only product based on Zink is the small printer Polaroid Po Go:

I would like to see larger printers using this Zink technology... A4 or A3.

By "instant printer" do you really mean dye-sub or are fast inkjets included? The Noritsu D701 is certainly a fast printer for professionals and one that competes directly with dye-sub printers. It uses the Epson Ultrachrome High Gloss 2 inkset found in the Epson R1900 but uses a huge printhead for speed. The quality, sharpness, longevity and gamut are far better than any dyesub printer.

By "instant printer" I refer to dye-sublimation and zero ink printers, this is, printers without traditional ink cartridges.

The zero ink technology is the closest solution to "instant" positive output, like the old Polaroids. I expect to see larger print sizes with this technology. The "ink" (nanocristals) are into the paper...

Today I received confirmation of the future availability of larger format Zero Ink printers (I suppose A4 or even larter size...).
