FWIW, BestBuy is now selling a 6 gb Intel QuadCore w/ 750 gb disk for $799.  Not going to wake any geeks up but it goes pretty quickly for pretty cheap, off the shelf.

An alternative viewpoint...

I went through this same decision last year after being a PC user since the IBM XT.  Because of numerous negative issues with Vista -- and I won't elaborate here in an effort to avoid flame wars -- I went Mac.  Yes I had to swallow hard and hold my breath -- for maybe all of three days. Then nirvana.  Not only that, I run three Win-only programs in Fusion running XP and it runs faster in a Mac Pro window than it ever did on my Dell Dual Xeon workstation!  I can honestly say I feel zero desire to go back to Windows machine --

Best of luck,

Before I spend £1200 on a new Vista 64 bit machine what Macs should I be looking at?  Just to compare

Cheers

This .pdf might help you decide how to spend you bucks on a new system.  It is all about PS and performance computing.

EXTREMELY happy with Vista 64 - get yourself that and be content. with Photoshop Windows CS4 being full 64bit now the future has arrived. no more scratch disk use ever - its amazing, and so mush faster - I save about an hour a day.

I was reading about someone who uses 96Gb of RAM on their Vista 64 workstation for 8x10" scans in 48bit with layers - and says it does an amazing job.

hallelujah for true full 64bit computing finally arriving in the real world.
