Any new lighting gear shown at Photokina?
« on: September 27, 2008, 02:46:05 pm »

I know about Profoto's Pro8 and Broncolor's Scoro power packs,
but was there any other new lighting equipment from Kino Flo (Kelvin Tile),
Dedolight, Briese, etc.?

Thanks in advance.

I don't know if they are showing them, but profoto has a new line of parbolic umbrellas which cost almost as much as medium format cameras.

They look good though and paras are the new beauty dish, which was the new ring flash, which was the new frensel, which was. . . .

Considering all these braking news I decided to peacefully invest in few Profoto parbolic umbrellas...
and give Cameras/Lenses/DBs a rest for a while

Received the 6' parbolic umbrella three weeks ago which is excellent... waiting for 10' mid October... can't complain, except the price is high... Profoto Para umbrellas to my surprise actually cost more than Boncolor!

How do you like the 6'?  Compared to Bron and Briese?

Thanks,

Kudos / Props to Hensel for beating the big boys to the punch with Lithium-Ion.
Hopefully, Broncolor & Profoto will follow suit sooner than later.
And yes, being able to work off AC/mains when available would be great.

What's the benefit of using these umbrellas instead of the beauty dish, ring flash etc?
Anyone?

Without going in to many details you'll find Profoto and Bronocolor paras are pretty much the same including the price too... so I can't say
I like one or the other better, I own both....

Can't talk about Briese, from what I've seen... they look good!!! There is so much specialized lighting pieces that I like and am looking to buy... but as far as industry standard, all will do the trick...
I just happen to have faith in Broncolor and Profoto!

I loved Broncolor personally for different reasons studio etc. and with Profoto mobility etc.

However, now with Profoto you can have the best of both, Studio & Location... again you can have equivalent with Broncolor too, but it gets heavier with those versos etc. although I like the docks... and the way they're build! I wish profoto would do something similar in their fashion!

One minor thing, probably not as improtant to others is colors... Broncolor looks very attractive to begin with but after a while
just looks aged or like a fashion from the 80'   similar to colors of Hy6... this is why I wish SINAR, ROLLEI and LEAF would change it to black a.s.a.p

I personally prefer Black.... if I could, I would even paint my ARRI lights in black too

PS: I am looking in to using Pro ring flash with Profoto Parabolic umbrellas, so we'll see how that goes...

You get a large but direct lightsource.   Kind of like the world's largest frensel that focuses.

For most instances it makes no difference between the large paras and other large umbrellas of soft light fixtures, except when you need that focused look with deeper shadows.

Given  the shape (amount of degree) they also allow you to keep the light directed where you want them i.e  off the background and focus more on the subject.

Brieze made paras all the rage for beauty and fashion and because they were so exepensive probably set the price standard, (think medium format).

There are some other makes from china that are knockoffs, though I know nothing about the quality of them.

Anyway, these are the prices from a profoto dealer in LA, which are just standard list for the profotos.  It wasn't clear of the size of the fixture.

180 degree $5949.00
240 degree $8765.00
300 degree $11449.00

Pier 59 Studios in NYC.

The small Briese, like 77cm, is awesome.  They have a full range of HMI.  If we have a big budget for lighting I light music videos with big and small Briese.  Bron gives a similar yet different look.  There is something almost powdery with the quality of the Briese lights.  Something to do with teh coatings.

You can fake these looks with silks, fresnels, and grid on the silk(s).  It aint easy and takes lots of lights and lots of immobile rigging.  My back hurts just thinking about it.

Unless these things are an integral part of your look, its best to rent when needed.

I am experimenting with making a focusing adapter to focus light with the Elinchrom Deep Throat Octa (great concept, badly executed).  I figure if if I could move the head around inside the octa I could get light similar to the small Briese.

As I said before I am looking to invest in unique/specialized lighting pieces and I would love to buy a pair of Briese focus 77 S, I assume it's compatible with both Flash & HMI...? I haven't seen similar umbrella/product from any other company...

Any combo/configuration flash and HMI you have in mind to go in tandem with pair of focus 77 S?

I can't find the prices on net, it seems like not many stores carry them.

I know this doesn't help you much since it's in UK, perhaps you can call and find out a bit more...

Anyway I'll give them a call tomorrow to see what's going on with US Distributors...

I've used them with Briese's own HMI.  Really nice.  You can have an assistant hold one on a light stand, a battery pack on his/her waist with the balast.  Doesn't attract much attention, you don't have to put down sticks.  For strobe, I've heard you can have it modified for Bron or Profoto.  They use a special stick light flash head with a reflector that is built into the shaft.  Nice.

The big Briese  is/was about $20k USD last I asked at Pier 59.
