Portable hard drive with card reader
« on: September 24, 2008, 03:45:38 pm »

I remember a few years back there were a lot of them. Does anyone currently use and/or recommend any in particular? I'm looking to back-up on location direct to a portable hard drive without going to the laptop at all. Advice?

Thanks.

I use a HyperDrive Space.  Works great.  Stuff in a card.  Press a button.  Done.  You can even set it up so you don't have to press that button.  There is a review of the color version of this device on the main LuLa site.

The Epson devices are also really cool.  They are also really expensive.  But really cool.

I use HyperDrive SPACE as well. I have two for redundant backups on the road. It's probably the fastest portable HDD out there with one of the longest battery lives, and can be used as an external HDD.

2 or 3" screen? Any real benefit from just ordering the shell and adding your own hard drive?

I have the SPACE which doesn't have a viewing screen - it only shows the UI. I don't see the point of having a screen on a portable backup device.

I installed a 160GB HDD bought separately. It comes with tools and instructions to do it, and formatting/setup should be easy for even those who are not geeks.

I'm thinking I might as well get a screen, because why not? I'm thinking of getting the smallest capacity and adding my own hard drive - 250gb. Foresee any problems with that? Shouldn't take up more space, the larger capacity drive right? Hmm.... maybe I don't need a screen.

You can buy the HyperDrives without a HDD and buy and install your own, or you can buy one pre-installed, but for a premium on the HDD.

The price difference between SPACE and COLOR is quite significant, and I don't need a screen, so I decided to buy a 2nd SPACE although COLOR had been released already.

If I was buying now I might buy the color version.  Just under the theory that I would know a tad earlier if the product lost its mind.  But with all the bit checking I don't think that is needed.

I bought the no screen version because I had a laptop with me.  So I'd rip the cards with the Hyperdrive Space and then copy them to the laptop.  I used to copy everything to the laptop and then burn CDs.  That sucked.

I bought a Nexto from a recommendation in a thread in MF.  Seems to work great, very quick and battery life is good as well

Thanks for the feedback. Interesting thread. I think I'm still going to go for the hyperdrive Color myself. Just deciding on screen size and such.

Alright, reconsidering again. If I went with the NexTo http://www.mydigitaldiscount.com/SPD/nexto...-1208441113.jsp

This HD would work in it correct? http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Western%20Digital/WD1600BEVS/

Apologies for the ignorance if I'm wrong.

If you're asking me, I don't know.  I bought mine with a HD pre loaded.
