Acute ringflash transport solution
« on: September 24, 2008, 03:04:23 pm »

Hi everyone,

It might be a little offtopic, but does anyone have a recommendation for packing an acute ringflash with a  soflight reflector for transport? I can't seem to find a dedicated case.

thanks for your input.

Check out drum and cymbal cases for the reflector. It is safest to pack the ringflash in a case like the Versaflex with your power pack.

Hi Raphael,

You should look into the Pro Ring Diffuser from Profoto. Depending on how you use your ring flash, main or fill light, it´s an good alternative to the regular ringflash reflector with similar effect. It goes on top of the ring light and packs nicely in a aircase from Tenba. I have a version of this bag that packs two Acute 1200´s or two Acote 600B´s plus two heads with two grid reflectors and the ring flash itself. And it comes in just under 50 lbs when you travel:)

I used a Tenba car case for that setup for in town use and by pulling off the camera mount could fit it in a pelican case for tougher protection.

i have my acute ring flash packed in a pelican 1650 case in a seperate compartment with a my acute lights. its got 2 inches of foam around it, but i have still smashed the glass at the front twice!
the tubes been ok, just the protection glass. so what ever you do, make sure it has quite a bit of very soft foam around it.

I doubt if those Tenba cases will cut it.  We transport our Ring flash in an Anvil case that I am positive will survive the next Russian attack and we've still busted the protective glass.

It is one of the few items I rent when traveling and it's cheaper than replacing the front glass and paying american airlines, $22,000 for baggage overage.

I talked with MAC and they do not have a specific case for the ring flash.  James is correct.  The car cases are good for location to location transport, but flying may be a bit different.  Tenba does offer the Aircase line, but it is not as robust as an Anvil style case or even a Storm case.  With all of the new luggage charges, it is getting more difficult to take your own personal equipment on location.

I'd rent when you get there.  I have my ring in a Pelican 1550, foam cut to fit.  First time on a plane the glass broke.

With the baggage restrictions now I roll really really light.  If I fly I rent.
