Epson firewire and Windows....problems???
« on: September 22, 2008, 06:54:51 am »

Hi All,
I have an Epson 7800 and an Epson 2450 flat bed scanner which I had previously connected under firewire on PCs running either XP or Vista. Both devices have mysteriously stopped working, even though the firewire interfaces cotinue to work and both devices function normally under USB. Most recently, I tried swopping out one of the PCI firewire cards and putting it in a machine running XP Pro. Plugged the 7800 in and everything was fine. I then left the machine on overnight. Microsoft did its usual sneaky trick of updating Windows and restarting my machine and hey presto!... 7800 no longer status reports on the cartridges and I can only do a nozzle check via the driver interface and nothing else.
Anyone else having similar problems? Tried Epson, but they have just given me the run around (you know, change your cables, talk to a 'computer shop', not our problem, your printer is broken, etc, etc, etc,......)

I'm afraid I don't have an asnwer for you. I had frequent problems with the firewire interface on my R2400 printer, so I ended up switching to USB.

By any chance, when you changed the cables did you do it by hanging over the printer/scanner and feeling for the 1394 port?

I've lost count of the times i've seen people do this and force the cable in the wrong way around, it pops the 1394 controller chip and destroys the port.

Check the metal surround on the port, see if it's been forced apart. If it has there's a good chance the ports finished.

Other than that i'd remove/delete the 1394 ports in device manager and restart the PC then reinstall the drivers from the web or buy a mac.

Drew,

Vista does not support firewire for some older printers. I tried to hook up my 2200 via firewire to my laptop and got the message it is not supported.

A Google search turned up that MS broke it in one of their updates of Vista. Don't know for sure how much of this is fact but I couldn't make it work so I'm back to printing over the network through my desktop machine.

OK, thanks for the responses. Firewire seems to be functional for other devices, so I think I will blame MS.
