I use a 10 ft cable without a problem. The Belkin gold tip should be as good as any. I have never had a problem with them.

I tried a 12ft standard cable. It did not like it at all. The 7ft one seems to be fine though.

Is it worth getting a better quality cable for extended length?

The USB specification states a maximum cable length of 5 metres (no idea what that would be in feet - about 15?). The price you pay for the cable will affect durability and reliability particularly when removing/inserting cables multiple times - i.e. a more expensive cable is less likely to break over time due to better construction. The cable doesn't affect performance (it will either work or not).

I used a 4 meter long cable without any problem. When I moved my printer to another room, I simply used ethernet cabling.

I agree, for longer distances, it's better to use the network.

covered this a while back.  Some vendors sell equipment to extend USB out to 500'.
The more 'common sense' approach for loss-free performance would be to either:
1. use a network
2. use a USB system - normal length cable (5meters) plugged into an inexpensive powered USB hub with another (5 meter cable) with another powered hub......

this method - since each powered hub has it's own power supply - allows you to spread a USB system throughout your work area - with lots of USB plug in ports / enough power to make things that require USB-provided power work.  I have a 4880 running about 25' from the computer - using one very small /nice powered  Belkin, high speed USB-2.0, 4 port hub.

The maximum single-cable length is 5 meters or about 16 feet. You can get ACTIVE cables which have a USB "repeater" built in. From what I've read of their literature you could put 5 of these together for a max length of 80 feet.

I got a 16 footer from Amazon; Check NewEgg and Google for "active USB cables" or "USB extenders". Beware - there is some junk out there so read the fine print!

see usb.org ---   THE industry standards organization for USB - for good technical info.

link:http://www.usb.org/about/faq/ans5#q2

it describes how to serially connect hubs for extended /accurate 'long' distance connections.
