Image Appearance across Modules
« on: September 10, 2008, 03:48:43 pm »

Whilst processing an image today, I noticed something I'd not really come across before: the image colour looked different depending on which Lightroom module I was in.

I grabbed the screens in each case to illustrate this (see attachment) or view here.

Now it could be something to do with a strange conflict between the image content and the screen resolution (I use an iMac 24") because, as the last image on the attached strip shows, the photograph was of a fine mesh fabric. Effectively, the picture is a bit like a half-tone dot screen.

But I thought I would ask if anyone else has ever experienced a subtle change in image appearance when moving between modules, regardless of subject?
I suspect in my case the problem lies with the nature of the image, but it's an interesting occurrence nevertheless.

In this instance, I'm finding it incredibly difficult to get a print the way I want it, as the image as I see it in Develop is not the same as I'm getting on paper (although it does closely match the appearance in the Print module).

I guess a subtext of this post is to discover how Lightroom renders the screen images that we work on in Develop. Are they jpegs or something else? Are they different renderings depending on the viewing scale?

Any comments or opinions would be much appreciated.

Roy.

Thanks Rich, all is clear now!
I'm glad that it's a documented effect, and the explanation makes perfect sense.
The key statement appears to be "The Library and Develop modules use different methods of rendering previews and they use different color profiles to display photos."
Who would have guessed?

Much appreciated.
