Satin papers

I give away a large number of prints, and only print on "rc" photo type papers for that purpose.  (The average person receiving a free print doesn't appreciate or understand the difference between papers anyway, so spending extra money on mat or fine art papers is a waste.  I also have watched far too many people man-handle prints.  Most people would ruin delicate fine art prints, even if they paid for them.  Anyway, I give away the prints for free, so they aren't going to complain.  When I recently toured New Zealand with a professional photo guide, he was appalled that I give them away for free, and was glad I don't live in his country!)

I really like the very flat satin finish on HP Pro Satin, but it costs twice as much as Epson Luster through B&H.  Epson Luster is the price to beat -- $1 per foot in 24 foot rolls.  ($100 for 100 feet).  HP Pro Satin is $2 per foot.

Have any of you used a paper with a satin finish that is as flat and non-textured as HP Pro Satin -- but at the price of Epson Luster?

Has anyone ever tried the Canon Heavyweight Satin Photographic Paper - 24" Wide Roll - 100' Long -- same price as Epson Luster?  How is the satin finish as compared with the really flat finish of the HP Pro Satin?

UPDATE -- I was planning on ordering a roll, until I noticed that B&H describes it as "similar to the renowned Premium Luster Photo Paper."  So which is it -- a satin or a luster finish?

(Canon also has several other satin papers that are even cheaper, but are lighter in weight.)

There is also the Ilford Omnijet Piezo Photo Satin RC Paper for about the same price.  The the description states that it "is specially designed to be compatible with aqueous piezo wide-format printers, but also it is equally compatible with thermal wide format printers. It accepts both dye and pigment inks, and it has an instant-dry microporous ink-receiving layer, for touch-dry immediately after printing."  Does that mean it would be good or bad choice for the HP Z3100?

And there is Epson Semimatte, but it hits $120 for 100 feet, still a good price.  As I recall it has a very flat finish and is similar to HP Pro Satin?

Finally there is Ilford Pearl.  As I recall that finish is not as textured as Luster but not as flat as Satin.

Marty,

Have you tried the HP Premium Instant-Dry Satin?  I like the results on it and its considerably less costly than the Pro Satin.

BTW, I've never been a big fan of the Epson Luster surface.  Too pebbly for my taste.

Yes, and I agree that it is a flatter and more satin-like finish than Epson Luster.  But still not as "flat" a finish as Pro Luster.

With regards to price, it is half way there.  75 feet for $94 as compared with Epson for 100 feet for $100.

I've been getting Q7991A from ATLEX for $84.

I hope you find something with the qualities and pricing you're hoping for.

I got my ID satin from Costcentral for $74 (75ft roll)
and Pro satin for $75 (50ft roll)
http://www.costcentral.com/searchresults.p...rds=z3100&GO=GO

This is the best deal I have found and they seem reliable, I've ordered at least 3 times from them with no complaints and free shipping over $599.

Also bought from http://www.amatteroffax.com
they have free shipping but ID satin is $90

If you haven't used the ID satin, it's a bluer white and slightly glossier finish than the Pro satin. I don't like the color and gloss as much and only use it for testing.
