Canon x100 printers
« on: September 08, 2008, 12:47:25 pm »

Although I was not looking to buy one, a recent problem with my Epson 9800 forced me to buy a Canon 8100 to finish a large printing job with a close deadline. I've been using it now for several weeks and am quite impressed with it.

The Photoshop plugin makes printing a breeze, and although not as streamlined as using ImagePrint on my 9800, it's quite doable and, coupled with its speed, even at highest quality settings, more than makes up for a slightly more time consuming workflow. Image quality comparisons between the two have shown that both printer/software combinations provide excellent, often almost identical, prints. Paper handling on the Canon is excellent, but the Epson is a little more flexible with odd sheet sizes. The Epson also wins for printing the whole width of 44" paper, while the Canon, loses about 1/8" on each side, an issue in only one or two percent of my workflow.

Of course, the biggest thrill for me is to now have both Matte Black and Photo Black inks in one printer!

So, I'm enjoying having both printers in operation and would like to hear from others using these Canons, and what problems they might fall prey to, if anyone has experienced any yet.

I used an ipf8000 for over a year sold it (with no issues) and moved to an ipf9100/ipf5100 which I'm using now.

I've been extreemly happy with them.  It's a shame that the 8100 doesn't have the hard drive because it's really cool to be able to print repetitive jobs directly from the printer or driver without having to go to photoshop, etc.  I didn't think I would use this, but now find that I use it all the time.

I also love the speed of the printer and not having to swap inks.  I feel this printer at it's agressive pricing is the printer to buy over the epson and hp.

Likewise-  love my 5100 and had no issues since I have had it. It gets used on average 3-4 times per week.

Hi,

5100 owner since febr '08. No clogs or other mechanical troubles (knock 3 times on wood...), allways on standby, is used 3 to 4 times a week.

It's probably due to a smaller marketshare of canon but it seems like people have substantial less trouble with the iPF x100 range then HP or Epson when I go through several discussion forums and look for x100 related posts.

Cheers,

Canon, at least, thinks there's a hard drive in it.

Thanks for clarifying that.  I had the 8000 and it didn't have the HD so I just assumed the 8100 didn't either.  Man that's a great deal if it's under 3K.  Canon is going no holds barred on these things.

Borderless only up to 42" rolls. On a 44" roll, or sheet, each edge has a .2" unprintable area. I find that rarely a problem.
