Epson 4880 Service Req 00010031
« on: September 08, 2008, 07:44:01 am »

Just received my Epson 4880. Upon first power-up, the LCD shows Service Req. 00010031. The printer then stops, all LEDs blinking and does not charge the ink from the newly installed cartridges. Full Stop.

A little Google work shows this is an error with the home position of the ASF (Automatic Sheet Feeder?), either the sensor or the actual mechanism.

I am waiting for Epson tech support to open but am hoping one of the local gurus could give me a suggestion. I REALLY don't want to box the printer up and send it back for service or replacement.

Anyone have good news for me?

Thanks in advance

Go to the yahoo epson list. There are a lot of error codes there. If it is new, I would definitely call Epson.

I'm sure you've tried this, but just in case, try power cycling it a few times.  I get a "Service Required" error on my 4800 every time my power goes off, which is fairly often.  Scared the crap out of me the first couple of times it happened.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Painless interaction with Epson tech-support. Called, tried a couple of maneuvers and determined the poor 4880 was DOA.

Gave them a shipping address and a credit card number and they promise a new 4880 at my door tomorrow with a return shipping label for the dead one.

The Epson tech told me I was to ignore the instructions which will be included with the new printer and feel free to keep the ink that came with the dead one. Seems like nice compensation for the headache of having a DOA, but I don't want to be charged for a second printer because I didn't return the cartridges.

Anyone have any experience with this?

Thanks again for the ideas.
