Cheap MF polaroid options?
« on: September 05, 2008, 12:54:42 pm »

Up until now I've been shooting exclusively with 35mm (film and digital) but would love to srt shooting some pola's as well.  Are there any cheap MF bodies out there that have easily procurable polaroid backs?  I'd be interested in the largest format possible - 6x7 maybe?

Also, as I understand - Polaroid has dropped all instant film.  Does that mean the world's supply has pretty much been sent all to ebay where it will be bid on viciously by hipsters from brooklyn wearing tight jeans?  Or are there other manufacturers?

EDIT - Added a new question at the bottom.

this gives the biggest medium format polaroid you can get.  If you go with the mamiya version, you can also put 6x9 rollfilm backs on it.  They run around 200-300 dollars.  I have one myself and love it for polaroids.  Good luck.

Fuji still makes instant film in packs that work with any Polaroid 667/669 mag. Which means most polaroid mags for Mamiya, Hasselblad and other medium format cameras. However, the 645 mags only expose a very small (about 1/4.th) portion of the full polaroid space, the 6x7 (at least the RZ) is better and you only loose a part of it.

There are still some talks apparently if someone is going to pick up Polaroids licenses and continue making film but it is a very limited and tough market to start up in so its doubtful if anyone will do it.

I used to take the insert out of the Polaroid back for the Fuji 680 and you get a 7Xnearly 8 image.  The corners of the image are slightly truncated.

I made bank on my 2 600se's about a year ago when the stuff was super over hyped, sold one for $400 the other over $525

In my opinon its over rated, they are cool but super heavy for what they are. If you want a great 3x4 pola shooter get the 180 or 195. they can be had for around $200

There is also a back that shoots 600 integral film that attaches to the rb67 and it shoots almost the full frame, its a very cool item.

Polaroid has stopped all, but fuji still makes small integral as well as 3x4 and 4x5 packfilm.

There is one on ebay right now for $630.

We use to use them all the time, shoot two or three in a row and tape them together for a super view of the lighting. and scene.

the 600 are great imo....there are 2 versions, the 600 with the fixed 127mm lens and the 600se with 3 interchangeable lenses (75-127-150) which also accepts rollfilm.....

there is also a 4x5 back for these....i believe they might even accept the 4x5 readyloads?

npc makes (made?) the 195 which was a lot smaller and lighter....

Don't know why you would go to the trouble to dump a GOOSE and even more perplexed why you would dump two and not hang onto one. There are very few cameras that are iconic and should just not be sold. I still have mine, it's heavy with the 283 Flash, the parallel finder is a little bit dimmer, and I may be to, but it still takes as good a Polaroid as it did on the first day. And it's still great fun to put that pic in it's portrait or landscape sleeve and give it to someone.

I'm curious about the 'Pro' digital poloroid that is supposed to be introduced in 12 months.

Sorry to dredge up an old thread but want to ask another (related) question.

Business has sort of changed for me in the past 2 weeks and now it looks like there might be a MFDB in my not too distant future.  Obviously, an MFDD isn't usable on any of the cameras I was asking about in my previous question.

Do any of the "standard" MFDB cameras (500CM, Contax 645, Mamiya 645AFDII, etc) offer Pola backs?

Picking up a camera right now is within my budget, so I'd like to get one and start shooting Polaroids, and will look into picking up an older back, probably a P20, towards the end of the year.  I don't want to go with a no-screen H-series, and any of the alternatives (Leaf, etc) are way out of my budget at this point.

Yes. They do. BUT at least the Mamiya 645 will not give you a full size polaroid. Not even 6x7 does that (at least my RZ doesnt) so the polaroid you get on a 645 AFD will only use about 1/4.th of the polaroid surface which limits its use to just checking the exposure & lighting really.

6x7 gives you a better coverage though and i've actually used polaroids from the RZ.

Have you seen this thread:

http://luminous-landscape.com/forum/index....ndpost&p=225164

There is a Polaroid back included. Maybe a great opportunity to get into the most advanced system with the best glass around?

Yup, saw that one... even though nothing's been posted, if I had to guess, it's way out of my budget

One day... ::drool::

Is there any way to modify a Mamiya 645 polaroid back to get larger images?

Not that i know of, but if you do find a way, let me know  I'd love to shoot polaroids that can be scanned with quality from the 645

if you want really big polaroids with a walk around camera, try one of these-

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1354...eld_Camera.html

with one of these on the back-
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/3089...Holder_for.html

using this film-
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/2783...tant_Color.html

that will give you the largest 5 x 4 polaroid.

you can use 10x8 polaroid, but the film isnt made anymore, and the processing needs a seperate processor.
