Canon 40D w/Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8
« on: September 01, 2008, 05:42:43 pm »

I have several leses, mostly prime leses, and just picked up a Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8. I'm quite happy with the lense IQ, build quality, and all that stuff.

However, the lens mount bugs me. There is a bit too much "play" in the mount. The lens itself is bigger and heavier than the rest of my lenses, so I've chalked the compairativelypoor fit to the size and weight of the lens.

Am I right? Do the rest of you out there with big/heavy 70-200mm f/2.8 (Sigma or Canon) lenses have a nice snug fit or is there a little "play" when the lense is mounted to your camera.

Thanks,
jrs

From my experience.  I've almost always got a little bit of play.  I do think that it is a bit more accentuated with larger lenses.  couldn't tell you why though

I have no play at all on any of my six Canon lenses.  If I did, I would send such an offender in for service.

Thanks for the input. The largest telephoto lenses I have other than the Sigma 70-200mm 2.8 are my Canon 135mm 2.0 and my Canon 200mm 2.8, neither of wich have any play and both of wich out perform the Sigma in every aspect.

However, I look to the Sigma as an price-effective, convenient telephoto when I do not what to swich between the Canon 135mm and Canon 200mm in the field.

Do you think minor "lens-play" is damaging to the camera body, mount and/or contacts? You have me worried now....

Although the play may cause abrasion that could be damaging to the camera mount over time, I would be more concerned about "damage" to the images due to misfocus in situations where focus is critical.
